I'm really surprised that it's Katowice and not Kraków.

In fact, this 2,5 mln is for the whole Silesian aglomeration. In Katowice itself, lives around 300 thousands people. It's just like as if you mention Essen and count the population from Dortmund, Bochum, Gelsenkirchen too.

To those surprised by Katowice: just look at the map. Katowice itself have about 350 000 citizens, but there are some 10-15 other cities (some of them above 200 000) so close that they form one metropolis. It's a similar story as with the Ruhr region in Germany - a big metropolis with no dominating centre. Actually no one in Poland refers to this metropolis as "Katowice", rather by the name of the region, but Katowice is the biggest city there and the administrative centre for the region, so probably that's why it's mentioned here like that. Personally I don't think it should be. The same way you could say Dortmund or Duisburg have 5 million or so citizens.
Krakow has some 800 000 inhabitants, a bit more it count nearby towns, but nowhere near the numbers of metro area in this quiz.
