Microsoft (and Nintendo and several other companies) are actually in Redmond... but I guess this quiz is counting metropolitan areas so they probably get included.

20 out of 50 for the poor old USA. Even Detroit (widely regarded as completely busted) ranks higher than most places.
Jan 9, 2012  delete  reply
It's metro areas. Detroit the city itself is a wasteland. But the suburbs make it a legit metropolitan area.

Even as screwed up as some neighborhoods are, and even with so many related manufacturing jobs now shipped overseas, Detroit is still the heart of the American auto industry, which has been doing quite well the last couple years after getting bailed out.

35 - I really should've mastered this. Amazing that most U.S. cities outrank the rest of the world.

I agree about New Delhi, it's been a problem on a couple of quizzes. Is it not the same place?
Jan 9, 2012  delete  reply
seriously not a single German city?
Jan 9, 2012  delete  reply
That's exactly what I was shocked by! Must be a mistake, I can't imagine Berlin, Munich or Hamburg not being there!

new delhi is the capital of india , it is one (new) part that lies within the greater metropolitan area of delhi , which is the actual city. Calling the city itself 'new delhi' would almost be like calling new york city 'brooklyn'

I find it amazing that Tokyo and New York are about double the size of #3, Los Angeles. The gap between 1 and 2 is close...between 2 and 3 is huge.

on wikipedia it says New Delhi is the capital city, Delhi is a "National Capital Territory" seems like Delhi is not a city, but a region encompassing many cities

Okay, okay. I'm officially caving and allowing "New Delhi" in place of Delhi, even though they really aren't synonymous.
Jan 10, 2012  delete  reply
But... but... Quizzy... does that mean Mexico is the same as New Mexico? York the same as New York?

I agree, they aren't synonymous

I was just in Delhi/New Delhi last week. It makes sense to allow both. Even though they are not totally synonymous, New Delhi could be counted as the anchor of the metropolitan area just as easily as Delhi could (it is where the seat of government is, after all), and New Delhi is the one that shows up on most maps. Driving around you would have no idea where "New Delhi" ended and "Delhi" began. It's the same metro area for sure.

Isn't Delhi a city and a state, just like how New York is to the U.S.

Montreal has a bigger economy than Berlin? Cool.

I can understand that, because Berlin is still a very cheap place, considering it's the capital of an economic heavyweight and a brilliant city to boot, however it will get more expensive as it recovers from the west/east divide. I am, however, surprised that Hamburg (the banking capital) and Munich arent on the list.

48/50 Missed Vienna and Baltimore I was quite surprised on how 40% was American cities
Dec 23, 2012  delete  reply
I guess it makes sense if you just compare the GDP of the United States to any other country. Though the US is also much bigger than most countries with more cities, I was expected smaller countries with fewer cities and still healthy economies to show up somewhere, like Germany for instance.
Feb 4, 2013  delete  reply
If I had stuck to American cities more and stopped trying to name world cities I would have done better. Go USA..

Hey I noticed there were no German cities so I investigated. According to wikipedia the economy of Berlin is at $101 billion, with a pop. of 3.5 million. However it's part of a larger metropolitan area with 4.5 million. If you assume similar income levels for the extra million then you can see how it might earn a place on this list. Also related is the Hamburg "metropolitan region"; I wouldn't put it on the list simply because the region is too large; however it does have about 5 million people which would put it on the list (not German btw)

If they are metro areas, and not just the cities themselves, then Minneapolis includes all of St. Paul. Weird. I live in St. Paul. The mpls metro area I guess has bestbuy and target and some others. I never would have guessed it, except it was out of desperation. I got it.
Apr 2, 2013  delete  reply
Also allow mpls for Minneapolis. You allow NYC, then allow mpls
