No, it was only recognized by Mongolia and the USSR. Not much of a country to me, more like a puppet nation.

That usage of "Communism" is so random, it hurts. Either you mean that singular Marxist tradition of communism, then you have to drop all of them, because arcoding to marxism, a communistic country is an oxymoron. Or you mean the generalistic term of "Communism", then you have to add at least Basque Country, Makhnovshchina, Mesopotamia and Parts of Israel.

There's never been a truly communist country obviously. We are using the word in its colloquial sense, meaning Marxist-Leninist. And of course most of these countries merely gave lip service to Marxism-Leninism.

Although, for a short time the city of Paris was an independent true marxist nation. However, it collapsed after one month and was never recognized.

I think it would be reasonable for North Vietnam to not automatically fill in after typing "Vietnam". By the way, just an idea for anybody who fancies making a new quiz: the same thing, but using modern day borders would be pretty cool, so you'd have to type all of the countries that made up the USSR instead of just USSR.

It would be interesting to add a column listing the number of their own citizens that these worker's paradises had to kill to keep the ruling elite in power over the years. After a while, an observer can see a pattern of revolution -> societal failure -> oppression (usually mass murder) -> collapse or serious reform to keep elite in power. The only truly communist county would have only one person left after the dictator had to murder everyone else to keep them in line.

No, a true communist country would be run for the benefit of the people. But unfortunately there are always power-hungry people willing to exploit others for their own gain.

Wow, OldSailor, tell us how you really feel, please. And of course oppression, mass murder and generally keeping the underclass in their place NEVER happens in capitalist societies.....

It happens in a global sense, for instance, American companies exploiting Bengali workers for cheap labour. Capitalism is just as flawed as communism, (if taken to the same extreme).

hellodrew - with the partial exception of "keeping the underclass in their place," you're right. But expand that to the last 120 and then you've got the Belgian role in Congo to think about. That was about as awful as it gets.

North Korea is still communist. They call it Jushe but its the same thing. Its allot closer to real communism than what china and the others do today. They were also founded as communist in 1945 by the U.S.S.R not in 1948.
