I spent 5 minutes thinking about Russia, since I don't really see it as Europe (as a European)

True! Why do people think that Cyprus is in Asia??? It is part of the European Union, they even have euro money !!

EU is just a economic union, even USA was asked if it wants to join EU, and USA is definitely in North America, isn't it? Cyprus is in Asia.

French Territory in South America is part of the European Union. Do you think that is in Europe?

Agree with zach810! Also part of Turkey is generally considered to be in Europe.

Turkey is part of Europe, even though less than half of Istanbul is the only part of Turkey that is in Europe. Turkey is in the European song contest, they are in the UEFA Champions League (Union of European Football Associations).
I think it's safe to say that Turkey should be part of this. All this goes for Cyprus as well.

Turkey is considered a part of Asia minor.
Generally, because the culture is a mix of Eastern and Western influences, it is hard to determine what continent Turkey belongs to.
Asia consists vastly of the Indian subcontinent and what some may call "Yellow Asians." Islam is considered a Western religion and the culture that follows is of a merchant-centric.
It is for the aforementioned reasons that Turkey is considered a part of Europe.
Anyhow, the difference between Western and Eastern Europe is substantial and when classifying Tukey as an Asian country, one often forgets the poorer, more diverse, and much less Christain Easter Europe.

Russia would be regarded by most as Europe.
Cyprus is in culturally and ecomomically part of Europe, and is a member of the European Union even if it is georgaphically boarderline (though the world quiz also has Cyprus as not European). Turkey is between 2 continuents, Europe & Middle East, though more of it is out of Europe than part of Europe.

Russia is a European country because its historical origins (slavic) and capital region are European. Turkey has a only a small piece of land in Europe, and its origins are central / western Asian. Cyprus is much closer to Anatolia or Syria than to Europe -- the one thing European about it is its history as a Greek colony. Even though Georgia adopted much of European culture, they are Caucasian, not European.

Russia is not a European country, it is a country that spans Europe and Asia (and though the majority of its land is in Asia, its 2 most populous cities are in Europe). It has less to do with historic origins than that by defintion the "border" between Europe and Asia includes the Ural Mountains which run through Russia.

Where is Cyprus and Turkey? These two are definately considered as part of Europe, I can understand about Russia being debated as it has links with Asia too. Also the last comment about Armenia and Azerbaijan .... they get into the Eurovision Song Contest every year I guess they've been adopted in.

If you use Eurovision as the decider then Israel is in Europe. I was always taught the division between Europe and Asia was the Bosoporos Straits, Black Sea and Ural Mountains, which makes Russia in Europe but not Turkey or Cyprus.

Don't go buy Eurovision, they tried to get syria or one of those middle eastern countries in, but they wouldn't recognise Israel for voting purposes.
As far as Russia goes, given that most Russian history took place in "European" Russia, and most of "Asian" Russia is empty of people, and that the capital is in Europe, I would say that russia is at least acceptable in a countries of europe quiz.

Cyprus is not geographically a part of Europe even though it's in the European Union. Also, Eurovision doesn't only have European countries competing in it. There are also some countries from the Middle East and Caucasia. Once even a country from Africa, Morocco competed. Russia should be counted as a part of Europe as well since its capital, most of its population and history are in Europe. Also, around one third of Europe's area is Russia. Turkey only has a small part of it in Europe so it's not actually needed here. Georgia and Azerbaijan have the same thing as Turkey.

Border between Europe and Asia is generally considered to be the Ural mountains.
As a result, the following countries are in europe:
Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan...and of course Cyprus.
Turkey is partially in Europe also.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe:
"Europe is generally 'divided' from Asia by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways connecting the Black and Aegean Seas." By that definition, (see the map on said page for visual reference) 5 countries span the division: Russia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, and Turkey. The latter four have a very small piece in europe, relative to the size of their respective countries. The bulk of Russia's population, however, resides in the European section of the country, so it is generally considered European, even without considering the Kalinigrad exclave between Poland and Lithuania. Also, note that Cyprus is clearly Asian.

Cyprus is clearly European. It is not part of the Asiatic mainland. It's historical heritage is Greek/Turkish. It is in the EU and uses the Euro as it's currency. I'm sure you'll find Cypriots would not consider themselves Asian at all.
Oct 26, 2012 delete reply
plattitude
Seriously, look at the map. Cyprus is separated from Europe by ASIA Minor. Sure it's not part of the Asiatic "mainland" (and neither are Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, etc) but it is part of the Asiatic tectonic plates. National Heritage is irrelevant, or else we might as well include Australia in Europe due to it's history in the British Empire. Similarly, EU membership is meaningless to the discussion of where a country is geographically--even the US was approached with membership in the EU. Guess we'll have to jump across the pond. Lastly-- I know several Cypriots, of Greek, Turkish and (gasp) mixed descent. About the only thing they agree on when it comes to Cyprus is that it is located off the Asian, and not European, coast.
