I feel so much better reading that! I missed Saudi Arabia while picturing it and naming everything there, going through Oman, Yemen, Kuwait... convinced there were no "S"s besides Syria, the Sudans, and moving on to the rest of Asia and Africa! Thought it was my age....

Scotland didn't get a mention cos the quizmasters are going by lists of Sovereign States and therefore use United Kingdom every time.(and not trying to be rude, I guess most of them are from USA so don't realise that nationals from UK consider England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland as countries)

Scotland is a country in the sense of "regional subdivision of the UK", not in the sense of "actual country". Otherwise, you would have to put the German Bundesländer on here as well, since "Land" means "country" in German.

We don't hold it against you missfoxxy! . Seriously though, you could debate all day about whether or not Scotland, England, Wales, and N. Ireland are countries. If you've done a lot of Geography quizzes on this site you've learned that Ivory Coast is really Cote d'ivoire, Burma is sometimes Burma and sometimes Myanmar, and that the only correct answer for England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland is UK. Not sayin that it ends the debate,.... only on JetPunk.

A general rule of thumb is that to be a country you must either have a historical claim to the land, have fought and won a war for the territory, or have total acknowledgement by all other countries. This includes Kosovo, Taiwan, and Western Sahara as countries but ignores Scotland, Northern Cyprus, and Palestine, which is conveniently almost exactly the same as JetPunk's definition.

I finally undid the timer and went all through each country around the world...That got me Swaziland. Then I tried the alphabetical holes and got Solomon Islands. But of all things, Saudi Arabia escaped my mind, ever though I pictured it in my mind and went through each country around it, staring at its shape in my mind. Is this because I'm 61? Do I need gingko biloba? Never see it like we did 15 yrs ago...did it have adverse side effects? I once fit all of Calif law in my mind, using a single sheet of paper with one word clues, connected to one another, that brought every area of law into my mind...I hate getting old! I always wonder, "Is this altzheimers?" "Stress?" Thanks to you guys, I learned every country tho I'll never type fast enough for you. But then I get these holes where I know it, but it's gone, and I am unaware. Are you young people like that too?

OK, first of all Grandpa, All jet-punkers are not youngl. At 60 I'm right behind you. Is it in fact your age? Sadly, Yes. Stress? I doubt it, although it is stressful being a lawyer from California. I think the likely culprit is cramming every single California law into your mind at the same time. That is bad for your health Pops! At our age we've gotta be careful. Try upping that Gingko Biloba. And if you've got to cram things into your mind, start with a small list, like a list of all the countries in the world, or all 50 States. Or if that seems too daunting, start with a list of your favorite politicians. That's doable for any American! ;)

I'm glad I'm not the only golden oldie whose brain feels like Swiss cheese with all the knowledge leaking out of it. And if i don't feel like it's leaking out, then I literally feel the roadblocks which are preventing me from accessing the knowledge I have stored in my memory banks. I have to say, though, that taking these quizzes is good for me. I really think they knock down some of the roadblocks when I force myself to go through or around them to get to the knowledge that is there. I, too, have managed to remember all the countries of the world, but I'm not sure I'll ever be able to remember all the capitals. And I used to be considered intelligent. Bah!
