I tried Australian shepherd, Australian collie, and Catahoula, knowing none were correct. The name was just out of reach.

Is a bull terrier different from a bulldog? And I never know the difference between all those white fluffy things!

The white fluffy ones confuse me, too. I tried shih tzu, pomeranian, and maltese before giving up. We've always had mutts due to the high number of people who dump their unwanted dogs (often about to whelp) in the country thinking they are doing the dogs a favor letting them "run free to chase rabbits" or some such rot. We've often adopted or tried to find homes for the frightened ones which survived long enough to find us, avoiding coyotes, cars, other dogs, and angry people so fed up with dumped dogs or worried for their livestock that they shoot them. I'd rather choose my own pet. Please, never, ever dump a dog. Be responsible for your own animals. It's also illegal. (Sorry, the soapbox just leaped out of the closet before I could stop it, but I'm SO tired of seeing these poor animals turned loose to become someone else's problem.) The city pound euthanizes and we have no shelters in this area which take them in, but dogs often meet sad ends when dumped in rural areas. Don't do it.

I tried shiba, and it didn't work, so I just tried doge to see how lenient they would be. Apparently very.

Arghh! The inconsistencies of what's accepted as allowable answers! Collie is accepted (even though it's a rough collie) but spaniel is not accepted, it has to be exact type of spaniel.

It's not inconsistent at all. Collie is the breed, rough indicates a variation of that breed, the other being Smooth Collie, where as cocker spaniel is a breed unto itself. Spaniel is like saying hound should take care of bloodhound and basset hound. There are 3 variations of cocker recognized by the AKC (parti, ASCOB, and black), while there are 12 breeds with the name spaniel in them.
