seismometer mesures and takes readings, seismograph is the graph that has been plotted by the needle of the seismometer - so sorry quizmaster, you're wrong :)

Actually a seismograph is the instrument that detects the earthquake as well as plots the graph. A seismometer is just the sensing instrument without the graphing capability. So, both terms are actually valid answers.
