I'm pretty sure Russia is considered a European city. That would be closer to the US than Iceland.

Maybe "which country which lies entirely within Europe..." would be more accurate. I tried Denmark first - Greenland, y'all :-)

Russia spans Europe and Asia. Obviously the part closest to the US is Asian.

Nope. It's only a five hour flight from the US East Coast to Iceland.

@Yankeefan: As others have said, while Russia is closer to the USA than Iceland, it is the Asian part of Russia that is. Iceland is the closest wholly European state, as even coming from Alaska, the European part of Russia, which is by far the largest nation in the world, is still further away than most of Europe. And adding to what others said - neither Russia nor Iceland are cities, but nation-states.

That "which European country" question can get mighty tricky. The Azores are part of Portugal, and they look like they're closer than Iceland - they're mostly autonomous, though, so I guess they can be ignored. Greenland has a similar relationship to Portugal and also looks to be closer than Iceland. Most glaringly, though, the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique are considered regions of France with full representation in the French Senate and National Assembly and are part of the European Union. They're just a stone's throw away from Florida, meaning that France is technically closer than any other European country to the USA.

You might consider doing us non-Americans a favour and changing the Aleutian Islands question refer to "which U.S. state". I was thinking which "state" as in "nation" and wasted a ton of time guessing different countries (including the U.S. which technically should have been correct).

ctleng76 - No : It is partly in Europe and partly in Asia. The Urals are the natural border.
