Whoever taught you that "alternate current" was the correct term was incorrect. "AC" does not mean an alternate or different type of current from "DC" (direct current). It was called "alternating current" because electricity switched back and forth between flowing one way, then the opposite way (i.e., alternating). Direct current flows just one way all the time. It was a great debate between Edison and Tesla as to which was safest for use in supplying electricity. Tesla "won." AC is the type of electrical flow that is used (at least in the USA).

This is true. Edison waged a dirty war in the press in an attempt to discredit AC, publicly electrocuting scores of animals, including cats, dogs, cows, horses and an elephant, to show how AC was more dangerous than DC, even though he knew the opposite to be true. He even secretly hired a bloke to create the first electric chair, despite he himself being opposed to the death penalty. Not his finest hour.
