apparently there's still about 21 percent of people who weren't aware of south sudan. I say that because if you get sudan, then you should also get south sudan. it's just like north and south korea now.

Nice. After taking many attempts to finally learn them all several months ago, my own averages on countries like Comoros and Kiribati were a little lower than I would have liked. But now, after the reset, I can proudly claim 100% on all of them. :D

Okay so I cheated a little but this makes me more aware of countries across the world, without cheating i'd have gotten about 150 countries. It's all the little islands that get me everytime.

Just to be picky, but shouldn't the Congos have to be entered separately? They *are* different countries after all.

I agree. They're completely different countries. Instead of just Congo, do DRC and RC.

If you can remember the two most well-known afghanistan and pakistan then that's your start. then just remember KKTTU. That will do it for you, and will make it actually one of the easier sections. Geographically, starting with Kazakhstan, the countries go alphabetically in a clockwise ring, like a clock. Kaz, Kyr, Taj, Tkm, Uzb. I have difficulty with West Africa (sierra leone, ivory coast, and liberia I'm often a little slower on). The small countries around Saudi Arabia also go a little slow for me.
Jun 4, 2012  delete  reply

Those are all good ideas... One thing I did to remember the problem areas is I did just them over and over. Do all of Africa (or just the western part), then click "Give up" and start over. I also made a text file of the countries I missed a lot. I can now get them all. Also, stupid little things can help you remember country names... For example... Maldives is out in the Indian Ocean, so I think of diving into the ocean. I could never remember "Comoros", so I remember it by thinking "My brain is in a coma, and I'm morose that I can't remember this island." It's stupid I know, but it works. It's a memorization technique called "Memory Theater". The more absurd the association, the more apt you are to remember it!

Sep 9, 2011  delete  reply

There's really no way to tell if cheating occurred. The fastest time that looks legit is 3:04. I say it looks legit, because the user took the quiz a few dozen times, showing improvement over time.

That would be the equivalent of typing about 70 words a minute.

not to say I'm the fastest typer in the world, and if someone can get this done in close to 3 minutes I'm in awe....I'm constantly typing as fast as I can with only a few misspelling pauses and 3:59 is the fastest I can do this...I think my peak would maybe be 3:45-3:35 if I typed perfectly. What is the fastest time overall...I'm just wondering how fast a cheater can do this...I'm assuming it must still take them about a minute.

Great quiz. I've learned a lot. I'm a quadriplegic and my typing is limited to one thumb. So I use voice activated software to fill out the countries. Unfortunately the software makes lots of mistakes--ginny for Guinea, dionna for Guyana, etc.--which I have to correct w/ the thumb. Still I'm up to 180 in 12 minutes.

Dragon Naturally Speaking is what I use, primarily because I can train it to correctly 'hear' what I'm saying, but it's actually fairly accurate on country names (especially Niger, which is NOT pronounced the same as the first part of Nigeria).

All done in 2.34 with 9.26 remaining including redoing a few typos, so I could probably shave .10 off my time if I kept at it. So yes, Quizmaster, it can be done fast without voice activation software or other cheating methods :) I don't even type properly - a glorified hunt and peck refined from years of practice - so I imagine an excellent typist could finish quite faster than me. I take the quiz frequently just to keep my memory skills sharp without signing in - but when I saw the new competition for fast times I just had to give it an official try myself. Everyone keep having fun with this and all the other great quizzes - JetPunk rocks!

ineedahobby- I don't mean to accuse you of cheating by any means, but finishing this quiz in under 3 minutes is rediculous...that would mean you are typing faster than a country a second...while I can do this with certain countries...like for all the guinea(s) I dont see how with countries like central african republic that anyone could average less than a second per country..I'm certainly not the fastest typer in the world, but I like to think I'm pretty quick and with a handfull of typos the fastest I've finished is 3:49 (with 8:11 remaining)..When transcribing the average WPM is 40 (with a standard deviation of 16.25) so 69.75 WPM (your average) would be almost 2 standard deviations away from the average...or in other words almost the best anyone could hope for...Obviously anyone of us that is finishing this in under 6 or 7 minutes has the countries memorized, but its still not the same as typing what is being said to you...so, I would think 3 minutes would be close to the fastest anyone could do this wit
Nov 10, 2011  delete  reply
glennish731
Just as a follow up...only 5% of pro typers type at 70 WPM or better, and the average typo rate is 4% meaning that on a quiz like this 7-8 typos would be average for a pro typer...So, if you have the ability to do this in well under 3 min...you are probably the fastest person taking this quiz legitimately.

IMHO better to go with regions than trying to do them in alphabetical order. anyone who can get more than half of these countries probably knows about where everything is, and whatever they don't know, they can learn very quickly. then you are able to visualize the map, and do one region at a time. Having a good visual grasp makes it MUCH easier than trying to do them in ABC order, trust me. Same applies with the periodic table.

I start with USA, Canada, Mexico, countries of Central America, then South America, then Caribbean islands. Then I do all of Europe in ABC order. On to Africa, starting with Algeria, and working east, then down a layer and back west in an "S" pattern. Don't forget the 4 islands on the East. Middle Eastern countries are next. Just getting all the surrounding countries of Saudi Arabia (about 15 of them), is all you need to do. Then with Asia, I just work in a general eastern direction starting from the middle east area. I don't know why but I always group Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, and type them together. I will also type China, Mongolia, the Koreas, and Japan together. Then hit the Asian islands (the ones north, or west of Australia). Then Australia, and the South Pacific Oceania islands (everything east of Australia). There you have it. West to east pattern, with some small group organization.

haha i also group thailand, cambodia, laos, vietnam -- and of course the 4 b's - burma, brunei, bhutan & bangladesh ... also do the mongolia, china, japan, koreas, singapore/taiwan (sometimes before the thailand group, sometimes after, depending on my mood)
Aug 17, 2012  delete  reply
I remember them in geographic order not alphabetic order. I think it's easier to remember that way. I can do it without looking at the map because the map appears in my head.

Oceania grouping: Largest and most well-known islands are (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji). The three outcasts are (Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, Tonga). Next is all countries that end in "U" (Nauru, Palau, Tuvalu, Vanuatu). Last are the "M and S" islands (Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands).

What I do is study the maps during class time at school. I have trouble with Africa and Oceania but on a good day I can name the entire North American, South American, European and Asian continent. Though I do have a short attention span so the studying doesn't always last. The important thing just keep trying!!! Those who try will succeed than the ones who cheat. Remember that and maybe quote my awesome advice. ;)

Kosovo and Taiwan are not true countries, they are not UN member states. If you include them, you also have to include Palestine, Western Sahara, Turkish Cyprus, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which are all in the same situation. Also, Kosovo does not show up in this game.
Feb 20, 2012  delete  reply
Actually you can be a real country without being member of the UN. Otherwise Switzerland wasn't a real country until 2002. And the Vatican city is still not a member.

I love doing this quiz over and over. In order to avoid just memorizing words, I start in different locations and move from one country to another. For instance, start in Canada, then to US, etc. until you hit argentina, then maybe across to Oceania, then move up through Asia, etc. Next, I'll start at the tip South Africa and work my way up through Europe and over to Asia, etc. I'm not actually sure where all of the Oceania nations are so I just start throwing names out until all the dots disappear. And the Carribean is hard because the dots are so close together if you forget one, you can't exactly see which one you missed. Finally, quizmaster, I also think that smaller countries like Kosovo, East Timor, and Burundi are very hard to notice when you've missed them. Perhaps if you switched the default color to red, then highlighed in green when you guess correctly, they'd be easier to spot when you miss them because there'd be a bright red dot. Great job, BTW.

My method is Africa first, start with the B's (Burkina Faso, Burundi, Benin, Botswana) then do the C's, the islands, and just generally group the letters together in Africa - also, I like to do Moldova, Kosovo, Albania, Algeria and the Maldives when doing Africa. Then move to Oceania, start with Australia, NZ, PNG and then all the others. Work my way up through South East Asia, then the Middle East making sure to end with the alphabetically organised -stans. Then moving on to Europe, starting with UK, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, micro-nations, bigger nations, ending with all the -ia's (Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia etc.) Finally on to North and Central American, ending the Caribbean with the St's, and South America. Boom, we're done!

I agree that Tibet should be on here, but not Greenland. Greenland is a territory of Denmark. Taiwan is not a country, either, but a "state" of China. They consider themselves an independent nation, but the U.N. doesn't recognize them as being a country because they're scared of hurting relations with China. That is exactly the situation with Tibet, so why do we give Taiwan recognition but not Tibet?
Jun 27, 2012  delete
That's not the situation in Tibet at all. Tibet is completely under the PRC's control. Taiwan is not. Taiwan's lack of recognition is pure politics. Tibet's is partially political but also reflects the realities of the moment.

Here's a tip to complete easily all the caribbean countries. First, divide them in 4 groups: 1) Start with "B" - Bahamas, Barbados 2) Start with "st." - st. lucia, st. kitts and nevis, st. vincent 3) have double names - trinidad AND tobago, antigua AND barbuda 4) dominica and grenada - they have short names and both end with "A" Note that each group has only 2 countries, except for the "st." one. Then there are jamaica, cuba, haiti and dominican republic that are pretty big to remember easily, so there's no need to group them :)

My method is to start with North America --- do the Caribbean -- Central America -- South America (North to south) -- Africa (South to Northeast - then fill in Northwest) -- Europe from Portugal around the Mediterranean and then back up through the North & West -- East to West for Asia -- North to South for Oceania. And when I memorized it all a year ago, I broke it down in to groups of 10 or so, just to make it easy. Still got it :D

Not that strange once you realize that not all 'countries' that were represented in the olympics are sovreign nations, including: American Samoa, Aruba, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cook Islands, Guam, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Additionally, the IOC recognises athletes from Palestine. On the flip side, there are also Countries that did not send representatives to the olympics, such as Kosovo, South Sudan and (big surprise here) the Vatican City. Comparing the two lists can be a very interesting lesson in current world events and diplomatic relations.

It's not about recognition, it's about sovereign control. Taiwan is another country that is independent, but not widely recognized.
Oct 7, 2012  delete  reply
The UN is going to vote on November 29 as to whether or not Palestine is a sovereign state. It's pretty much a shoe in, but would recognition by the UN allow Palestine on here? Because if it's about sovereign control then South Ossetia, Somaliland, etc would have to be here.
Nov 15, 2012  delete
zachary there's a difference between autonomy and sovereignty. South Ossetia, Somaliland are not sovereign states.
Nov 23, 2012  delete
As Zach pointed out there was a vote and Palestine is now recognised as a sov state. (Even though of course Israel owns their poor a__s) :(
Dec 25, 2012  delete
Taiwan is NOT recognized as a sovereign country by many when in fact it IS due to political reasons (wishing to maintain good diplomatic relations with the PRC). "Palestine" IS recognized as a country when in fact it is NOT for political reasons as well (to maintain negative diplomatic relations with Israel, or curry favor with Muslim nations, or simply to make a political statement in favor of Palestinian statehood or generally against colonialism or imperialism as the situation in Israel is more and more commonly misconstrued). The UN granted Palestine observer status as a non-member state because it was voted on and currently there are more members of the UN who wish to make political statements about Palestine than there are memberss who wish to accept reality. Gaza is self-governing, though they do not control their own borders and they also have not applied independently for recognition. The West Bank is still under occupation. "Palestine" doesn't even have a unified government.

It took me a couple hours, but I memorized all the countries so I would get all 196 if I could type faster. I play this game on my phone, so my typing ability will always be limited by my touch-screen. I can only manage to getto on average, 189/196, and that's so frustrating. I was wondering if it would be possible to install a feature so users are able to choosehow much time they feel they need for certain games. obviously people play certain ones over and over again. It would be a nice feature for those who know the answers but are now able to have the choice to race the clock and gradually improve by picking lesser amounts of time. Like I said, in my case, I'm ultimately limited by how fast I can type with just my thumb using a smart phone touch screen. It would be nice to have the satisfaction of naming all the countries before time runs out. ;)

when you get to a certain point you do it on memory...I type them in the same order everytime I do the quiz and I could recite all the countries in that order without a map...by no means am I bragging about that, but I would assume anyone finishing this quiz in under 7 minutes is doing it by memory alone

Once I could get them all on here, I started using an app on my iPad where you have to click on the location of each country. It's way harder than just "memorising" the names, but thanks to this quiz I found it pretty easy. If I didn't look at the map and just "memorised" it I wouldn't have learned where they all were.

No it doesn't. Palestine is an observer state of the UN, not a member state. While 131 countries have recognized Palestine, it has no agreed territorial borders, or effective control on the territory that it proclaimed. While I personally believe that Palestine should be granted statehood, this quiz deals in reality not in personal or political beliefs.

Up to 164... I keep going by the map instead of memorizing the list. The micro-nations (especially around Oceania) get me every time.
Feb 23, 2013  delete  reply
I don't know if you already knew this or not, but under the map there is a button you can click that says "show dots for micro-nations"
Feb 25, 2013  delete  reply
I saw it, doesn't help my failing eyesight or poor typing - but thank you anyway.

It might be because some people want to test themselves in certain continents only and are bored to type everything else. I know I have done that myself once wanting to train on Oceania and Africa. I guess it counts it as a negative percent.

THank you Johnnyboyarr for being one of the first not to boast about your score and your age. It makes me happy to know that others out there know modesty actually exists. Keep trying though. I can't don them all either. It's just to hard to type quick enough. But forget about the time and just learn and have fun... 35173

You people who keep FORGETTING the mironations of Oceania PLEASE LEARN THEM. Not everyone lives in the US or UK. Out here in Oceania people exist too and we are getting offended by the shear amount of you who forget US. I am really surprised you actually read this comment : ( Don't you Forget About Me...
