But what is unforgettable about Beijing was that AWESOME opening ceremony. Truly a spectacle. I need it on DVD.

Agree completely. I haven't missed an opening ceremony since the '70's and Beijing stands out by a mile. It blew my mind!

That opening ceremony was the first thing I ever watched on my brand new, first ever, flat screen, HD TV. Felt like I had a window overlooking Beijing in my living room. After a lifetime of "rabbit ears" and non-HD, that was spectacular!

There are some great stories about that and other early Olympics. Look it up on Wikipedia. Back when it was still a pretty small and disorganized event there were all sorts of crazy shenanigans...

and, yes, this is also true. :D They basically blackmailed them into moving the games there from Chicago which had originally won the bid.

It was so barely organized at that point in the game's history, it was really just an extension of the World's Fair being held there that year.

How do you hold the Olympics in a place like Moscow?...
reply

Many of these Olympic Games have great stories that make for brilliant reading... from the silly "sporting" events held until the '30s, Jesse Owens and the Nazis in '36, skipping some to the near-bankruptcy of Montreal in '76, the Cold War boycotts in '80 and '84, the rise of capitalism from '84, the outrage of the OG held in Atlanta instead of Athens for the bicentennial in '96... You name it, it's there. Just try and picture the Olympics held in the Soviet Union! :)

Wasn't the outrage that Sydney got the 2000 Games instead of Athens? At least that's how I remember it.

Joeythelemur. Nope, the outrage was with Atlanta because those were the centennial of the Modern Olympic Games, so many thought Athens should have hosted them.

I think these comments were based on weather on the mistaken assumption that Sweden, Finland and Russia are permanently frozen. Of course the Olympics are held in summer and as I type this it is 20 degrees Celsius in Helsinki, 22 in Stockholm and 30 in Moscow - perfectly decent temperatures to conduct a sporting event in (possibly a little too hot for comfort in Moscow).

Everyone that comments on how they missed this one or that one, mustn't realise that you can read the comments while taking the quiz. So if people get stuck, they can just scroll down to the comments and that has helped me complete a quiz numerous times!

Why not just print out a google list of Olympic Cities and type them into the quiz .... If your going to cheat at least make it 100%.
