It's almost gotten to the point where there are so few true *featured* running backs, that it's almost the same as wide receivers. Generally there's a number 1 and number 2, but they're both featured enough that they should both be considered "starters". Players like Mike Tolbert, Brandon Jacobs, Ryan Torain, Ryan Williams, and Ladanian Tomlinson are nearly as important to the offense as the listed starters... or at least as deserving of a spot in the "starting lineup" as the WR2. Who's more important to the Chiefs - Thomas Jones or Jerheme Urban?
