Daddy Longlegs are not spiders, but are in their own order (Opiliones). They are an arachnid, though.

In Australia (and probably elsewhere) they are a Spider (Pholcidae) , in the UK they are something different as you say.

In the UK, a daddy long legs is a fly with six really long legs and wings, like this: http://www.thestranger.com/images/blogimages/2010/07/16/1279301447-800px-crane_fly_halteres.jpg not a spider.
