Vatican city should be added, it didn't exist as a country until 1929, therefore that piece of land was in Italy before.

That was the first one I entered. The Vatican was cast free by Mussolini and he certainly didn't have a say in jack squat in anything other than just how quickly to say "yes sir" during WW1.

Properly the Pope State (Stato della Chiesa) was extended over four Italian regions and it ceased to exist when it was annexed by the rest of Italy in 1870. The Holy See continued to reign as a spiritual institution over the Christianity but no territorial sovereignty was recognized until Mussolini and Pius XI signed the Lateran Agreements (Patti Lateranensi) in 1929. Vatican City as a modern recognized country began to exist that date, and since then it has never been occupied nor heavily influenced or manoeuvred such as San Marino was. The Pope was granted his influential juridical personality even against the willing of Mussolini and Hitler, although not too openly (e.g. by saving Jews inside the walls of the Vatican). :)

You're welcome

What do you mean with occupied during WWI? During WWI, Italy occupied Albania - that's basically it! - but definitively never occupied French Tunisia. I guess you messed up WW1 and WW2.

I don't know what the quizmaker meant, but the first two columns are in alphabetical order, so the headers must be wrong.

Italy also occupied Monaco during WW2. Also, in 1919-1922 Italy briefly occupied Antalya, in Turkey, an Maiorca (Spain) in 1936-1939.

Weirdly I read an article saying Liberia and Ethiopia were never colonised but then saying Ethiopia was an Italian colony during 1936-41. I guess they meant not a colony prior to WW1 (when other African countries were being grabbed by Europeans), but it's just a little confusing. This quiz seems to be right though.

Ethiopia is frequently considered to have been 'occupied' and never actually 'colonized' by Italy, therefore Ethiopia was never colonized. This is because Italy never had the time to actually impose any cultural changes etc. as the local inhabitants kept rebelling. At least so I have understood.

I think that the short time that Italy was in control in Ethiopia means it was never really a colony of Italy. Just like countries in Europe such as the Netherlands and Poland who were occupied during World War Two are not considered to have been colonies of Germany. Korea and Taiwan were colonies of Japan, because the occupation lasted a long time. Other countries that were invaded by Japan during WWII are not seen as Japanese colonies. Five years is not long enough to have imposed your culture on a place.

Libya not Liberia.

No, Liberia was right, sort of. Liberia and Ethiopia are often cited as the two African countries that were never colonized. The rest of the comment was relevant specifically to Italy. You could make an argument though that Liberia was colonized before it was given to freed slaves and descendants of slaves from the U.S. Then, after the Berlin Conference of 1885, in a very real sense, the descendants of those ex-slaves colonized the rest of the territory now known as Liberia and ruled it until 1980.

Germany was included in the German Empire quiz, Spain in the Spanish Empire quiz, Mongolia in the Mongolian Empire quiz, France in the French Empire quiz and Japan in the Japanese Empire quiz. I wonder why this rule exists only for this quiz.

What part of China was ever occupied by Italy? Never heard of that. But part of Egypt was, from the border up to El Alamein and Italian troops on the Eastern Front occupied places in modern-day Ukraine and Russia. Albania wasn't occupied during WW2, it was occupied in 1939, yes, but before war broke out, so you should put it in the 'colonies' column like Ethiopia.

Actually @thegreatduck is right. The whole of Kosovo and tiny parts of Serbia were briefly occupied too during WW2. Just relying on roughly made maps made by wiki users is quite inaccurate, as you might figure out here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_occupation_of_Serbia where more detailed maps and description are provided. During those four years indeed it was part of "Italian East Africa". Brutally occupied and never completely subjugated but this is not relevant for this quiz.

It was occupied, and liberated by the forces of the British Empire. Colonialism in general and the British specifically rightly get a lot of criticism for historical events; perhaps it is important to remember what actually happened in the case of Ethiopia. It was liberated through the bravery and sacrifice not only the Ethiopian people but also that of the personnel under command of the Royal Navy and the British Army. It was restored to full sovereignty under Haile Selassie as soon as reasonably possible.

I have been to Tianjin multiple times, but am only now discovering part of it was ceded to Italy for much of the first half of the Twentieth Century (between the Boxer Rebellion and Japanese occupation when Italy changed sides in WWII).
