I decided to hide the host column for the World Cup since it gives too much away. Added England as a top 3 finisher (for the first time) for the 2015 World Cup. Also consolidated all of the countries into a single point each, so now there are only 9 answers. Will make the final update tonight.
The men's soccer quizzes never specify that they are only counting men, so I was following the trend. I don't see why men should be considered the default sex.
But the FIFA World Cup Champions quiz doesn't specify that at all. Meanwhile, the instructions here ask for every winner in World Cup and Olympic football history, a gender-free instruction, so all the men's tournaments are missing!
What do you mean? I said that the quizzes about men's soccer never specify that they are about only men's soccer, to the exclusion of women's soccer (which is also FIFA and also World Cup). Though since I made this remark, I've noticed one or two quizzes were updated with caveats to indicate that it was about men's soccer, most of them are still, just like the quiz you linked to, assuming that male is the default gender. It says "FIFA World Cup Champions." That title SHOULD include women. But it doesn't. It's only about men.
Your understanding of the world is small minded and sad. Not everything that is typical should be accepted as normal. I know these words are synonyms but they have different connotations.
they should be considered the default sex when talking about the fifa world cup since greater than 90% of mentions of the FIFA world cup, when no gender is mentioned, are about the men's world cup. That is how language works. What terms/words mean is dependent on the usage of those terms. Using a term in an extremely unusual sense is just bad communication.
I understand how language works. The fact that you are pointing this out and still objecting to the quiz suggests that you are willfully missing the point.
Japan and USA in the final again this year. England finally got a 3rd place finish. I'm sure the fact that they didn't appear on this quiz at all before probably confused many people taking the quiz. Kudos to them. I'll update this tomorrow.
Found this very confusing, as it only relates to Women's Football tournaments. Reading the comments I can see that maybe this was meant to make some point by the author about sexism in football. As a women, living in the UK where football is predominately a male sport, it is great to see the Women's game getting the recognition finally. However for the purposes of a time restricted quiz, perhaps a specific instruction as to what the topic relates to would have been better.
WOW. Huge upset this year at the Rio Olympic games! First time in history that the American team did not finish in the top 3 in either a World Cup or Olympic event. And Brazil's team didn't manage a top 3 finish, either, in spite of being heavily favored to do so and having the home turf advantage. The top 3 finishers all were on the quiz previously so there's no change in the stats.
I'm a bit surprised to see that 1996 was the first year it featured in the Olympics. Also disappointed in myself for not realising that the Scandinavian countries would be right up there.
They've had men's football at the Olympic games since 1900, 30 years before the first Men's World Cup was held. Women football players didn't start to get any recognition until much more recently, however.
This could have been a good comment if you had realized that if it's okay to make quizzes solely about men's sports to the exclusion of women, then it's similarly okay to make one solely about women's sports. Spoiled by the unfortunate and tiresome sexism.
oh, so "FIFA" does not appear anywhere in the title "FIFA Women's World Cup?" That's weird. I thought I saw it somewhere. There's nothing wrong with or incorrect about the title of the quiz.
No you have missed my point. The FIFA World Cup only relates to the Men's tournament. Therefore it follows that when talking about FIFA World Cup winners we are exclusively talking about men.
It's quite funny that you're crying so hard about this. You always insist that "American" only refers to citizens of the USA because this is what most people mean when they use that word. By the same logic, when people talk about the World Cup they are referring to the men's tournament. So stop crying, accept that most people only really care about men's football and that it makes sense that when referring to women's football it requires this clarification.
Which one doesn't have FIFA or World Cup in the title? You're obviously very smart so maybe you can help us figure it out, I was having trouble finding it. And good work continually doing the thing that it was funny you were accusing others of doing, for 2 straight years now.
They both have FIFA & World Cup in their title. But only the women's game has "Women" as a qualifier. It goes without saying that if there is no qualifier then it refers to the adult men's game.
There's nothing to add because if you understood the point the argument the discussion was over years ago. So all I hear is the sound of you completely missing the point, and "wah, wah, wah, wahhhhh!!!" (and you apparently didn't even understand my last comment, because I'm repeating myself now)... but... go on. I'll let you have the last wail if you want it.
I completely understand your point, but I think you're missing mine.
You want to make a point that not only men play football, I get it. I watched the last Women's WC and I enjoyed it.
But the Men's WC is simply called the FIFA World Cup, there is no qualifier, unlike the Women's WC. Therefore it is only reasonable that without a qualifier it makes sense to assume it's the Men's game we're talking about rather than the Women's, the Under 21's, or the Homeless World Cup.
Not to mention the common usage that I hear you constantly mention when talking about America. Just like America refers to the USA, World Cup refers to the Men's game.
I you understood my point you wouldn't have left the first comment (and five follow-up comments). I understand your point perfectly fine. If you think I ever didn't... then you're missing the point.
Yeah, because that’s why anybody comes to Jetpunk, to be schooled on how very small-minded we all are. We must learn all of our life lessons from someone who clearly spends all of his time commenting on his own quizzes, and looking for opportunities to intellectually belittle anybody he can, humble-bragging all the while. Apparently has an IQ higher than Stephen Hawking but rather than solve the mysteries of the universe, prefers to teach us Neanderthals lessons about sexism, through the medium of annoying football quizzes.
Don't get people's confusion/ even anger. If you really know football then you'll have immediately noticed that there is no (mens) world cup in the odd numbered years, and very quickly sussed that that years related to Womens world cups, and... hey presto. Easy enough.
Good quiz even if it was just made to prove a point. I don't care if they call it the Men's World Cup and call the women's one just just the World Cup, but political correctness is silly
What I don't actually like in general is when people group the World Cup with the Olympics. I don't know about women's football, but in the men's game, no one really cares about Olympic football. But then again, I now recall seeing Alphonso Davies' (ex?) girlfriend celebrating when Canada won a few years ago
Yeah you're right. That's why only fat out-of-shape people compete at the Olympics, just phoning in their performances, nobody that has ever done any training or preparation. and the countries that host the event have been known to cut corners and spend only a few thousand dollars to put them on - less than the budget for many county fairs. Attendance numbers are frequently in the low teens; they're lucky if ticket sales even reach triple digits. Clearly nobody cares and it makes no sense to make quiz questions about this obscure cultural curiosity. My bad.
That's not the point... You don't have to be so passive aggressive lol
The reason most people don't care about Olympic football is because it's restricted to U23s only with only 3 senior players allowed iirc. The qualifiers also rely on U23 tournaments and there are too few teams as well. And the Olympics often coincide with the season, so, many clubs don't let their players go to the Olympics, forcing teams to field their B or C players
yeah I know the top players in some countries don't participate in the Olympics. But that doesn't mean nobody cares about them. Maybe you don't care about them. But I get the sense that people try to downplay them because whatever country they're from doesn't do well in them. Because obviously they're a huge deal, so, saying "nobody cares" is clearly bogus. Something else has to be going on.
You could just say... "Germans care more about the men's World Cup than women's Olympic football, so they don't put as many resources into succeeding at the latter".. and that would be true without overshooting the mark. Americans generally care substantially less about soccer than they do about American football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey or NASCAR, which is one reason the American men's team doesn't do as well. But I wouldn't say nobody cares about soccer just to be dismissive. Obviously some care a lot.
You made a valid point, but it's still a little misleading. Nevertheless, it was still a good quiz and it taught me a little bit about the teams to watch out for this year! Come on England!
Your issue should be with FIFA. Your quiz title is therefore incorrect.

Take a look at the list of tournaments in the link you sent.
FIFA World Cup & FIFA Women's World Cup.
Again your issue should be with FIFA. Until FIFA changes their terminology, your quiz title is wrong.
You want to make a point that not only men play football, I get it. I watched the last Women's WC and I enjoyed it.

Thanks though
Lame... clever, still.

I still watch it if my team is playing though
