So it's been a few years since I made one of these. Last one was from 2015.
New additions to the top 100 include Quito, Houston, Mumbai, Baku, Hanoi, Phoenix, Rome, Warsaw, and Medina; some of which made very impressive gains from 2015.
Geneva, Chicago, Luxembourg, Shanghai, Manchester, Guangzhou, Reykjavik, Muscat, London Stansted, and Istanbul Ataturk all fell off.
Among the rest, mostly minor shufflings. The ones I remember moving up the rankings a lot include Doha, Xi'an, Bogota, Christchurch, Montreal and Los Angeles.
Those that moved down the most without falling out of the top 100 were Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, and Bahrain.
Toronto and Dublin were two of my worst airport experiences. In Dublin, I had to walk through multiple narrow duty free shops just to get to my gate. In Toronto, they had tables instead of seats in the gate waiting area. There was some sort of tablet autoplaying ads glued to each table, and people were just leaving their half-eaten food on the tables which wasn't being picked up by the airport staff. That was 2014, though. Maybe they've improved.
I had a similar experience to what you described in Dublin at the airport in Sharjah. Worse, nobody knew where the airport hotel was located and it was impossible to find forcing my mother and I to pass through customs multiple times looking for the entrance.
I hate airports that have inadequate or uncomfortable seating or where the employees are anal retentive about people laying down or trying to sleep or get comfortable. This is part of the reason why I feel Heathrow and Schiphol are perennially overrated- had negative experiences in both trying to rest during long layovers- and one of the many reasons why Changi stands out so much to richly deserve it's #1 spot.
On this list I've personally used Changi, Incheon, Haneda, Hong Kong, Doha, Heathrow, Narita, Schiphol, Taoyuan, Dubai, Denver, Suvarnabhumi, Charles De Gaulle, Gimpo, Kuala Lumpur, George Bush, Atlanta, SFO, SeaTac, Delhi, Sheremetyvo, JFK, LAX, Bahrain, Domodedovo, Fiumicino, Logan, Budapest, Warsaw, and Fukuoka.
Agree for the most part with the rankings. Though I think Schiphol is overrated like I said it's not ranked as highly as it used to be. And though I have issues with Heathrow it's not really any worse than most airports, just could be better.
Surprised Frankfurt was so high. I had to wait about 6 hours for a transfer and found it rather dated and disorganized. Living near Toronto, I find it disappointing in comparison to most European and American airports. Although it depends on which terminal, seating areas are congested and dirty. In the arrival and check in areas, it looks more like a suburban train station than a large international airport.
I think that, in general, most airports are pretty dreadful places so apart from top 4-12 these are mostly airports that aren't quite as bad as the others.
That said, the one I find most oddly overrated on this list is Doha. I don't understand why the airport or the airline of Qatar always gets rated so highly. The airport doesn't have much going on, is ugly, with uncomfortable cold metal seating. But I was there years ago and they've moved up a lot in the rankings so there may have been renovations.
