I thought Kiribati was just as likely to be abandoned to the sea as the Maldives, and it seems like several other answers could also apply to the jungle and treeless clues. Are those statistically the countries with the highest and lowest % of forestation respectively? Egypt doesn't seem accurate to me... I mean... the ancient kingdom of Egypt wasn't the first state in the world, it was predated by several older ones to the east. If the implication is that the modern nation-state of Egypt is the same as the ancient kingdom that's not really true, either. Egypt has been part of Alexander's empire, the Roman empire, the Ottoman empire, the Arab Caliphate, the British empire, etc. the country that exists today bares no resemblance to the older one and has no direct ties aside from the geography which isn't entirely the same either.

However, I'm most puzzled by the Ukraine clue. What does that even mean? I didn't know Ukraine was disappearing.

I am making the confusing questions like the Ukraine one easier by stating the question differenting. The ukraine one means its population. Aren't there many countries experiencing a population decrease? Japan, Syria, Spain, Portugal, the Baltics, and most of the Balkans are all declining.
