The two kingdoms separated less than amicably over a series of conflicts spanning over a hundred years (1337-1453), known today as the Hundred Years War.
French Guiana being part of France and placed closer to the equator than anywhere in Europe allows the European Space Agency to have a very useful launch site. It accounts for about 18% of the region's GDP and so they are unlikely to just give that up.
I know these wouldn’t be put as normal answers, but could you put a little bonus section with UK (Gibraltar through Spain) and Morocco (Ceuta and Mellila also through Spain)
They would be on any other quiz, especially if we’re using French Guiana to make a connection with South America. Spain has land borders with both the UK and Morocco, so should be included.
Gibraltar and French Guiana are very different situations, for example French Guiana gets to vote in French national elections whilst Gibraltar gets no say in UK general elections.
To use a US comparison, French Guiana is to France what Hawaii is to the US. Meanwhile Gibraltar is the UK what Puerto Rico is to the US.
Netherlands shouldn't be in the list. Saint Martin island is shared with France. Saw someone pointed it out and another user made it clear; but it should be at least the same way Morocco is (which, btw, Morocco shouldn't have that interrogation mark).
Instead of quibbling, try to understand why we've made the choices we have. There is no way to satisfy everyone. Also, we make extraordinary efforts to remain consistent on all our featured quizzes.
It doesn't matter if part of the country is two borders away if another part directly borders.
Russia is two countries away from Lithuania BUT... Kaliningrad borders Lithuania, and as Kaliningrad is part of Russia, we say that Russia borders Lithuania.
The countries by borders quiz includes the Spanish/Moroccan border, so I think it has a decent bit of precedence. That's unlike the Spain/Gibraltar border, which is hardly ever present on Jetpunk.
Quick reminder that all of the Spanish regions are classified as "autonomous communities".
Ceuta and Melilla have exactly the same legal status as any other Spanish region. They are equally represented in the Spanish Senate. In fact, one could argue that Catalonia, the Basque Country or Navarre are much more autonomous. The fact that they are cities rather than regions does not have any further repercussion. The same happens in Germany, for instance: Berlin or Hamburg are as integral to the country as Bavaria or Hesse.
Yeah as LuciusMarcius has said Ceuta and Melila are technically overseas territories of Spain but ,using that logic, French Guiana is an overseas territory so countries such as Argentina, Colombia and Guyana should not be included on this quiz.
what about UK? If you are counting Ceuta and Melilla as a border between Spain and Morocco than you should count border between Spain and UK through Gibraltar
This quiz (and JetPunk in general) seems super well thought-out in terms of what is accepted for country borders.
- French Guiana is undisputedly part of France - it is one of the 18 administrative regions of France and effectively has the same status as any in Metropolitan France. So France shares a border with Suriname and Brazil.
- Saint Martin is an overseas collectivity and therefore not of the same status as a region in Metropolitan France, so France and the Netherlands do not share a border (even though Sint Maarten is a fully constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands).
- Gibraltar is an overseas territory and not a subdivision of the UK. Therefore Spain and UK do not share a border.
Ceuta and Melilla are first level subdivisions of Spain and seem to fit the bill as fully part of Spain. Perhaps this doesn't seem to be as settled because they're not as well known, but hopefully JetPunk will figure out a consistent position on the Spain-Morocco border.
POV : you consider French Guyana which is an overseas region (and department of France, but not Saint Martin which is an overseas territory and not an oversea region.
Not Algeria though.
