I don't agree with classifying a brilliant mind like Sagan or Newton simply for being smart, but I brace at the insult of calling Napoleon Dynamite a nerd.
No one said that these people are NOTHING more than nerds. that's just one thing about them. if you did a quiz about people with blonde hair, it doesn't mean that that's the only distinguishing feature of that person, it's just one.
By a dictionary definition: a person who is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a particular subject, especially one of specialist or niche interest AND/OR an unfashionable person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious. So, where does this conflict with the greatest minds?

Seems a loose usage of "nerd." Looks like the QM is using nerd, geek, and dork interchangeably. Meh...as a representative of at least 2 of these categories, i'm good with it.
