Just what are they teaching children in schools today? How could only 55% get Alaska or Hawaii right? How could only 61% get New York? I'm amazed with only 49% for Massachusetts. But what shocked me most of all is that only 82% got Florida, because not only is Florida a huge state (4th in population according to the 2000 census...perhaps it is 3rd now...I am not sure), but it is in such an obvious position. In my opinion the MOST obvious state is Texas because while it is smaller in size than Alaska, it is shown in its correct position in the continental USA whereas Alaska is always in a corner not in its actual place. 92% is not BAD, but I expected better. No, I'm not a teacher, and I'm not even that old...I'm 25.

People from other countries are probably getting lower scores, Heathnyy5. I know my US map, but I couldn't tell you where all the Canadian provinces are.

I'm from a western state, so those are easy, but the eastern states had me going until my 5th grader had to learn them - then I found out I wasn't smarter than a 5th grader.

OK QUIZMASTER - All the other geographic puzzles are EZ - EXCEPT - Please, please give more time on the Countries of the World - It stays at #1 because so many people cant get it done in 12 Minutes. I'm sure it will take at least 15-20 - even if you know them all. It's the TYPING. HELP!!!

Heathnyy5, A lot of people get these answers wrong because we're not from America. I'm sure the majority of American would struggle to point out British counties.

Easy to blame the non Americans for bringing the scores down. I wonder if it is true?

US geography, states and capitol used to be taught in the 5th grade. We were given large maps and fill in the state and the capitol. Hung it on my room and learned it that way. It works. I still remember them after 30 years.

We had to learn states and their capitals in the 3rd grade.

I'm from Europe and I tried this quiz until I got 50/50. After one month, however, I got only 20/50 :-( I wonder how you, Americans, do the Europe quiz.

@hhgygy -- I may be an anomaly here, but I am an American who can name and locate all of the countries of Europe (and Africa, Asia, South America, North America and Oceania). I think that naming and locating the states of USA is probably so difficult for so many because they are not as familiar with the country itself -- like @jkpunk said, I am among those unfamiliar with the counties of the UK. I know a few by name, but could not locate them. Now, @Cicely mentioned the Canadian provinces, but I am a little bit better with those... maybe there's a quiz on here that can teach me! :)

Hhygy, I sympathize with you. I am pretty decent with geography (I like to think), I'm American, and can do this with no problem. Vermont/New Hampshire almost slipped me though. As for the countries of Europe, they are much more difficult for me, because I'm not from there. I missed like 12 or 15, all of those small southern and eastern countries. I faired better with Africa, missing only 4 or 5 on first time. Asia was also easier for me.

Ok, now who's that one percent who switched up Virginia and West Virginia. Really?

i know all of the states on the east coast because i live on the east coast, but i always have trouble with the north western states. however, i couldn't finish this test because my computer was going really slow each time i would answer. i think that might be why some of the eastern states' scores are so low. people probably didn't have time to get to them. hopefully that's the case, i can't believe 62% of people would just not be able to name new york...

CRAP. i went back and tried again, almost got a 100%, but i ran out of time right before i answered alaska!!! darn

I learned the states/capitals/locations in Catholic grade school-we were given blank maps and learned by filling in the information and memorization. Additionally, my parents provided maps and puzzles of the states for us kids. Great learning tools. I did the same for my kids. They know the states & their correct locations (and capitals) but no thanks to the public educational system since, apparently, this is no longer taught in public schools (and my kids are in "gifted" programs ). There is NO excuse for Americans to not get all of the states correct. It's really not that difficult.

Hey people, I did this quiz and got 7 correct which was a bit of a surprise to me since I am here in Australia and have never studied your great country, just visited a few cities... so if our stats go into the mix, then some errors might be better attributed to non US citizens.

From what I can tell by comments on various quizzes throughout this site I think just as many non-Americans frequent this site as Americans do, so I think it's perfectly plausible that some of the low percentages are due to us non-Americans. As others have said, how many Americans could name and locate all of the English counties? Being a bit obsessed with geography myself I know all of the states and where they are, as well as the world capitals, the locations of countries etc. etc. but I know that I'm certainly an anomoly amongst my friends! I think a lot of people don't realise how large a state New York actually is so maybe that throws people.

I am too, jadekelly. There's a few southeastern european countries that throw me as far as exact location, but other than that, same thing here.

50/50 and I'm from Australia, never even been to America! Kind of wondering how only 57% can get Hawaii though. Thanks acer9199!
2011-10-05
jongamgee
For those of you who are complaining about how poorly people are doing in states like Hawaii, please note the response categories. 56% guessed Hawaii, 3% said Other and a full 40% guessed "None" This doesn't mean that only 56% of test takers know where Hawaii is, it means that 40% didn't answer the question/didn't finish the quiz. Those who answered were 93% accurate. Also note that the later states, i.e. East Coast states where more people live are also lower, bc people stopped the quiz. Make sure you can interpret the data before you start lamenting how bad our schools are! :)

I always, always, always screw up Missouri. So much so that when I need to remember what state I always forget, I can't even think of the word Missouri. I get to that one, skip it and wait till the end to see what is left. Pathetic.

@Donna: I am in middle school right now, so I was in Elementary school pretty recently. I learned all the states, their capitals, AND their nicknames in 4th grade. Everyone in my county did. I don't know what state you're in, but they really should teach it in schools.

not that it's much of a laughing matter but one side is like green while the other is green and orange lol. I swear I got some of those states mixed up.

Definitely a lot of people gave up on the quiz before they finished it, which goes a long way towards explaning why so few people got the obvious states of Alaska and Hawaii (and, I would have thought, at least Pennsylvania, New York, and Maine).

I don't know about you but I can name every single country in the world and where they are including the states since I am in the united states. I'm in middle school so I think this is pretty sad.
