Took me three times but helped me learn some of the flags I didn't really know.

The dates and pictures on the flags really help with guessing.

The best flag is New Mexico by a mile, although I suppose the Zia could be a little bigger.

I also really like Arizona. I think underrated flags are Hawaii, Ohio and Rhode Island, even Wyoming. You need something big, bold, easily recognizable, can be seen from a distance.

I do kind of like Virginia, because it's so gonzo.

The absolute worst flags? Wisconsin (1848!!!), South Dakota, North Dakota (not very good artistry at all), Nevada (so many lost opportunities, why isn't their flag the oro y plata one? Also, why does Idaho need to say "Idaho" two times on its flag?

Maryland's is pretty cool. Ohio's is distinctive. Texas and North Carolina copied each other and Chile. New Mexico is pretty cool. South Carolina's is good but would be better if the blue was a couple shades lighter. I would guess Idaho's says 'Idaho' twice because it is so boring that they need to remind people who it belongs to.

North Carolina copied US Texans. They got their flag in the 1880s & our one was from the 1830s. It's sort of a coincidence that Texas & Chile have a similar flag. Both were inspired by US colours & Texas also took inspiration from the design of the Republic of the Rio Grande.

As a Texan I will not take this slander! ;)

A lot of these states didn't have flags until the late 1800's, and I think they made them quickly to put them on official stamps or something like that? So a lot of states haven't felt the need to change theirs in decades, as doing so takes time, effort and money.

Minnesota’s flag is awful. It’s very monochromatic with blues/greens. The lines on the flag are all straight. It’s very jarring, especially juxtaposed with the other flags, most of which are colorful and flowing. Then there is boxy, bland Minnesota. Just sticks out, and not in a good way.
+2
Level 74
Apr 27, 2024
I disagree with some of your reasoning, but I do agree that I do not like Minnesota's new flag. It's not a bad flag mind you, generally good flag design. My problem is that it looks more befitting of a city flag than it does a state flag. It lacks any personality and charm that the other state flags have, including Utah and Mississippi's new flags which do capture that essence while also improving the flag.

I agree with this, but disagree with the Minnesota bit. Utah & Mississippi have excellent distinctive flags now, but Minnesota's is so bland and corporate. Kinda works in a way given how many big companies are from the Twin Cities (like 3M which technically stands for "Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company")

I'm from Texas & am blessed to have a state with a lovely flag. Those darn North Carolinians copied ours 50 years after us!

I don't like the current iteration of the Minnesota flag either. Why'd they get rid of the one with green and white? That one was so much better! It would've been a top 10 US flag for sure, but they just had to make it bland smh >:(

And yeah Texas' flag is iconic, but imo the best one has to go to New Mexico. Maryland is a close second. The fact that both of them don't have the color blue is not a coincidence ;)
