In January 1st, 2023, the Rolling Stone published a list of the top 200 singers of all time, "from Sinatra to SZA, from R&B to salsa to alt-rock". How many of them can you name?
Art Garfunkel had the most amazing voice ever (imho). Ridiculous not to include him! Same with Celine Dion. Whether or not you like her music, there's no denying her voice is brilliant.
Well, RS is really not known for being technical on their decisions. For me, another one missing is Milton Nascimento, one of the greatest Brazilian singers - he just puts so much feeling into everything he sings.
Agreed. Rolling Stone magazine has a well-known obsession with Bob Dylan. Very influential singer sure, but they could have put him at #50 instead of #15. Nice to see some international singers, but like 90% of this list is still just American or British. Beyond Celine Dion and Janelle Monae, I can't believe there's no Dolores O'Riordan--one of the few truly unique voices out there. The list isn't total rubbish (especially compared to their previous "100 Greatest Singers of All Time"), but it could certainly be better.
Wow, what a list. I entered the names of so many famous singers from all genres and eras, just to see them not make the list. I did manage a score of 90/200, but I couldn't believe the people who were overlooked. Well, thanks for the quiz!
Good omissions mentioned in the comments. Mama Cass Elliot, Madonna, and Big Mama Thornton come to mind as others who didn’t make the list and probably merit consideration.
Steve Perry being number 82 is an outrage. They always miss so many amazing classic rock singers too. Lou Gramm, Grace Slick, Mickey Thomas, Jim Morrison, Brad Delp, Michael McDonald, Phil Collins, the list goes on.
Lots of last names like Baker, Wynette, Spector, Harris, Ferry, Tucker, and Wilson weren't counted. (I couldn't have misspelled all of them!)
Ground breaker...sure. Singer, not nearly on the same level as those around him.
No love for Janelle Monae?
