Well, Malta was awarded the St George's Cross to 'bear witness to the heroism and devotion of its people' during the siege they endured in WW2, as it was a British colony at the time. According to legend, St George slayed a dragon, and if you look closely you'll see on the St George Cross a picture of him slaying a dragon. This medal was incorporated into the flag of Malta in 1943, on which it proudly sits to this day. This makes Malta, along with Bhutan, one of only two sovereign states to have a dragon on its flag :-)
