* The team that won the 1990 final did not gain promotion due to being found guilty of financial irregularities, and the runners-up were duly promoted instead.

The first two seasons of the play-offs saw three teams from the top end of one division and one team from the lower end of the division above compete to either gain promotion or avoid relegation.

The second tier was known as the Second Division until 1992 when the formation of the Premier League saw the First Division become the second-highest division. A rebranding in 2004 saw the First Division renamed as the “Championship”.
