I scored a 100, even though you give credit to the Shadows (never heard of them). In 1961 I remember hearing Apache by Jorgen Ingmann, which was a big hit in New York City.
The Shadows had numerous singles go to number one in the charts in the UK. Their version of "Apache" is considered one of the most influential UK rock singles in the pre-Beatles era (though it was not a hit in the US). In an effort not to be too America-centric, I have included a few UK hits among all the US hits. Both the Ingmann cover and, in the '70s, the Incredible Bongo Band version achieved greater success in the US.
