Are You Too Dumb To Live #2

Never anticipated making a sequel to this one, but much to my surprise, the first quiz in this series is actually one of the most taken quizzes I ever made, in addition to generating more discussion than any other.
This one is a little bit harder than the original, but I made it all multiple choice to help.

Appropriate process for taking this quiz: 1 - Answer first question correctly. 2 - Answer second question correctly. 3 - Realize that all answers are A. 4 - Press A until it stops working. 5 - realize final question is not answer A, read final question and try each answer until successful. 6 - furrow eyebrows at the odd logic of final question. 7 - go back and read the questions. 8 - nod ones head, smile, and think how great the world would be if everyone thought this way, but still question the logic of final question. Irony, perhaps? 9 - think up and post a witty comment.

Thailand pros: the most amazing beaches in the world, great shopping, fantastic nightlife, delicious food, beautiful *extremely* friendly women, nice people, relaxed culture, open and permissive society regarding most things, good international airport, warm weather all year round, very foreigner-friendly, good hospitals, good public transportation, everything is cheap, $10 massages, several budget airlines, almost impossible to be lonely there.

Cons: a bit conservative, corrupt obscenely wealthy king considering how poor the country is, widespread poverty, Bangkok humidity, dirty backpackers and sex tourists, too religious (though, if you're forced to pick one of the major ones, I guess Buddhism is the way to go), censorship, civic unrest, Muslim terrorists in the south, Gulf residents taking over the area around Soi 4, unrealistically high condo prices, being expected to stand for the king's song before movies, few good-paying jobs.

I visited Phi Phi this year for the first time since 2007 and... it wasn't quite the pristine paradise that it was ten years ago. Maybe it was dirty before and the tsunami washed all that away? Not sure, but, was slightly disappointed. :( It's still very beautiful just wasn't completely overwhelmed like I was the first time I went, it's much more crowded now, there's been some erosion, some places are run-down, and the beaches do not get proper upkeep. Little bits of litter everywhere.

I was also really (even more) disappointed with my return to Phuket. It has become so touristy and expensive. So many scams. Hard to find a nice girl on Bangla Rd who isn't just there to rip you off now; total opposite of before. And $12 hamburgers at Burger King, in Thailand, is just criminal.

Bangkok is still more or less the same though the girls on Soi Nana are not as pretty as they used the be and the bars not as lively or interesting. Prices on everything have gone up but not as much as in Phuket. But there are more clean and upscale shopping and dining areas.

I should add a question about Princess Diana's death. I knew there were some nutter conspiracy theorists out there on this subject but until it made headlines again recently I didn't realize just how crazy they were. Theories such as the SAS shined a light in the eyes of the driver to make him have an accident.... based on random speculation and ignorance... it's exactly like the 9/11 conspiracy theories. This isn't about point of view it's about verifiable facts, but thank you for playing, and I appreciate the feedback. :)

Also, since the real age of the Earth is 4.5 billion years you don't think "about 5000 years" is close enough to "4014 years?" 986 years is pretty inconsequential in geological or astronomic terms. To quote Mr. Richard Dawkins, "If somebody believes that the world is only a few thousand years old, when the true age of the Earth is of the order of a few billion years old, that means they are out by a factor of... a million. Which is not a trivial error! It's equivalent to believing the distance from New York to San Francisco to be 28 feet."

I gathered that you were a Creationist. However, the scientific method is not a matter of point of view. There is no credible evidence to back up the belief that the Earth is less than 5,000 years old. And I'm very aware of the arguments that people like Ken Ham and Ray Comfort make. I used to be a Creationist myself. Eventually I came to realize this: it's not a point of view equal to all other points of view, it's a willful disregard for what has been demonstrated through evidence.

I enjoyed the first quiz a lot. I enjoyed this one just as much. I appreciated the comments on this one more (and, well, I read more of them) because they were much more civil in tone. I actually agree with just about every point on here but I will point out that I have known some extremely intelligent and well-educated people who are still religious (in one variety or another) and/or are conspiracy theorists. I will even point out that a lot of the people whose works rationalists base their views on still managed to believe in God (or at least the God-of-the-Gaps). I also find it intriguing that it is nearly impossible to convince a conspiracy theorist that they are wrong or someone who is not a conspiracy theorist that a conspiracy theory is correct. I realize that the title is probably part of your sense of humor and will admit that I took it because of the title, but I will respectfully disagree on the "too dumb to live" point. And I will take the 3rd if you ever make it.
+1
Level 82
Oct 31, 2014
You're right. The title isn't meant to be literal. I also know plenty of smart people who are religious and/or conspiracy nuts. I used to be deeply religious myself. I didn't get any smarter when I became less so. There was just a fundamental shift in how I viewed the world and processed information. I decided that it wasn't enough to feel like something was true or rationalize a belief in something. I became a skeptic. I think I have very good reasons for being a skeptic and could support this worldview at length if asked to do so. But I realize that skepticism does not necessarily equal intelligence. It's a way of looking at the world that is learned, not something innate, like intelligence.

I have noticed that the evidence provided by Conspiracy Theorists tends to be more negative than positive evidence. Most of the theories revolve around "holes" in the "official version/cover story." They have no evidence. They've got dumb questions that are easily answered and asinine theories that are easily debunked, and have been, yet in the face of these answers and those theories' debunking they go on believing anyway. Raising questions is fine and good. Raising questions that have been answered and then insisting they haven't been answered because you don't like the answer is not.

Dec 5, 2015
Is skin tone the best definition for race that you can come up with? If so, it is indeed a pretty farcical concept. That would mean spending a day at the tanning salon would change your race. It would be an albino child with dark-skinned parents would be a different race than the rest of their family. It would mean that there were people from Nigeria, Southern India, New Guinea and the Australian Outback who were all in the same race; just as there would be Japanese, Italian, Algerian, Argentinian and Turkish people who belonged to the same race. And the question of how many degrees of variation in the tone would be necessary before you found a different race would come up.

This is a great quiz, accept for the last one. There is no "best country". Don't get me wrong, Thailand is a great country. It. like many other formerly third world countries, is modernizing, not to mention it has a really awesome culture and history. But every country has it's ups and downs. The government in Thailand for example is infamous for corruption. The United States may have widespread obesity and Donald Trump, but we have a beautiful, huge country and a population composing of people from all over the world. The UK may be ethnically divided and UKIP is a pain, but the effects their culture has had on the world cannot be ignored. Even Iraq and Syria have good things about them. There is nothing wrong with being proud of your country, but accept that every country has its ups and downs and that we, as a species, are all one in the same.

Surprised to see none of the two quizzes have a question relating to "flat earth". Funny enough, I learned that people still believe in that, finding out due to a guy named Eric Dubay on YouTube. Along with that, this Eric guy believes Hitler was a actually trying to save us from the jews, he also has videos name "Gravity doesn't exist" and "Relativity doesn't exist". On top of that, he doesn't even believe in the moon landing. And thanks to both of your quizzes (and the stupid beliefs of the internet quiz from QM), I've realized how many stupid conspiracy theories people still believe. What's next, the Mayan people were correct that the world ended on 2012 and that what we are living on is a hologram.

I didn't believe that these people really existed (except for one very old very stupid cleric in Saudi Arabia that even other Saudis were making fun of) until somewhat recently when I wandered into the FlatEarthers YouTube section.

Still.... I think it's a pretty negligible number of people who think this way. I hope. I was trying to pick out things that are believed by a reasonable percentage of the population. By reasonable I'd say at least 10% or more.

Also... start a blog about that Mayan hologram theory and I don't doubt that you will have a few disciples. I may start it just to see how many people fall for it. But I'll need to find things to "back up" my claims, which will be very hard to do, but I guess it'll be worth it. I guess the technique of saying "that you've been brainwashed by the government into believing..." is quite effective, especially since it works with some of the flat earthers and many other people.
+1
Level 82

True, the only thing they say when they are questioned is either "you are brainwashed by the government" or "you are blind". I guess that also works. I honestly don't understand their purpose with trying to find out if Hitler really killed Jews or if the Earth is flat. They say it's because "finding this out could make you wonder what else the government has lied to you about", but I honestly wouldn't care what the government is hiding or lying to us about. As long as I can live my life in peace, I honestly don't care what they are hiding. Oh well, as they say in my native Spanish "Cada loco con su tema" (translated to 'Each madman, or crazy person, with their own theme)

Most of the Flat Earthers are crazy Christians who point to the fact that the Bible describes the Earth as flat and the universe as geocentric, and so have decided that Satanists cooked up this conspiracy to fool people into believing in a spheroid Earth to take people away from Jesus. It's some serious high concentration stupid.
+1
Level 29

Glad you brought it up. It's pretty concerning. I believe that's the wrong way to interpret the Bible.

The verses commonly cited apply more to a circle than a sphere, such as "the four corners of the Earth" in Revelation 7:1. This is most definitely just an expression for distant locations, the same as "the ends of the Earth" used elsewhere. Others like Samuel 2:8 and Psalm 75:3 refer to the "pillars of the earth". This is a single part of a larger metaphor, comparing the earth to a house and getting the point across that the Earth is God's creation.

If you take these verses fully out of context(I'm guilty of this myself), you don't receive the intention that was meticulously written by professional scribes using every possible technique to preserve meaning.

There's also the point that these books were written by people thousands of years ago. Even IF the Bible DID flat out say that the Earth was flat, of course the authors didn't know what the earth was shaped like, not for sure.

+3
Level 70
Nov 17, 2018
Yes, that might be it. And, yes we did come to that agreement. Personally I don't think it makes much sense not to define overprescription of antibiotics, antidepressants or painkillers as included in "Western medicine", but you're entitled to define the term however you like if it is your quiz. You asked for a source about my statement that this is happening in the West, and stated that you had seen it but mainly in Saudi Arabia and the Philippines. Also you said that if a doctor wrongly prescribes antibiotics they are not following standard practise and are liable to be sued. This source shows doctors prescribing them even though there is only a small probability that they will be effective and defending their decision. I got the impression that the practice is fairly standard, as the GP was willing to defend the decision on camera. I also felt like they were really unlikely to be sued as the patient asked for them and it would be hard to prove their responsibility.
+2
Level 82

Western medicine is properly defined as treating illness with whatever medicines, techniques, or surgical procedures have been best demonstrated to treat said illness. It is research based and subject to peer review and revision, not based on intuition or tradition without evidence. Good practitioners of Western medicine must constantly stay up to date on all current literature and follow "best practices." Over-prescription of of antibiotics definitely is NOT advised, and anyone who does that is not properly practicing Western medicine. It doesn't matter if a doctor does it or even if the National Health Service allows it. They're not following best practices if they do that. The adverse effects of overprescribing antibiotics are very well documented.
+2
Level 70
Nov 21, 2018
Yes I agree, and don't want to spend a lot of time arguing definitions. What I meant was that overprescription of drugs should be considered as a distinct and probably worse problem than so-called "alternative medicine". The reason why medicine that has been proven to work (beyond the placebo effect) is called "Western Medicine" is so that it can be distinguished from homeopathy, prayer, magic crystals, faith healing etc. without people who practise the above claiming that they are part of "Western Medicine". This distinction is not the relevant one in the context of overprescription, hence my previous statement. I'm not trying to claim that overprescription of antibiotics is advised by Western Medicine, or that doing so is properly practising it. Nor am I claiming that any of the treatments listed above should be used instead of real medicine if you actually have a disease (although the placebo effect can be useful for diseases that are partially psychological, such as chronic pain

Your single carrying of Bush era liberalism well into the 2020s is delectable. I feel like you need to be preserved for all humanity to gaze upon. Truly kino stuff.

While it's true, of course, that we're always learning new things. And the wise will take the time to assimilate new information and be open to changing their views and opinions based on that. Still... right is right. Wrong is wrong. True is true. False is false. Reality is not subjective. These things do not change according to cultural or political fashion.

People always project. I have no doubt that *you're* political opinions are in perfect lock-step with whatever is trending on Reddit or Tumblr (or X or Parlour?) right now... but... mine have never been. I've been a committed rational skeptic my entire adult life. My opinions *never* were popular. Not now. Not during the Bush era, which I'm guessing was before you were born. I've always been an independent thinker without a tribe who believed what was evidently true and advocated for what made the most sense. Liberal, conservative, or whatever.

But all of that, and your smug and misplaced condescension aside... as oft repeated: these quizzes are not based on my opinions or my political views. They're based on facts. Maybe your political views require that you believe in something other than what is evidently or demonstrably factual. Mine do not. This puts me at odds with every politician from every era.

Kal help. I typed in "b" for "studying two-thousand year old scribblings of uneducated desert nomads" and it didn't give me the point. It's so difficult to tell what your opinions on religion are.
