I literally laughed out loud when I read that. It is true though. I mean, come on. That guy does not look like he is watching his diet and making sure he lives long enough to continue his less than brisk writing pace.
If he wants to make sure that each book is a quality effort then we should let him. I for one would rather read a book written to the best of his abilities rather than a series of books churned out with little or no thought put into them.
It's not the reason he is gonna pull a Robert Jordan on us. It's that he's gotten greedy with the tv series and rather works on that than on writing books. Probably pays better. To me it feels like he's forsaken his original fandom, which is not very honorable.
I too would rather GRRM take his time to write a quality book than rush to meet an arbitrary deadline and have the book suffer as a result. Here's the problem though: I've seen no indication that he's even trying to write the book at all anymore. He's taken on numerous other projects instead, from editing more short story collections to overseeing more Wild Cards books, to working on graphic novels and a book detailing the earlier history of Westeros. If he's actually seriously working on The Winds of Winter, then by all means, he should take as much time as he needs. But I don't think he's doing that. I think he's procrastinating and doing anything he can think of to avoid actually working on the book, and that's not cool.
