Could please accept "syrinx" as an alternative for Pan flute? It was the original Greek name, and according to Wikipedia it is considered synonymous also in English. Thank you (:
That was so easy! Then again i really like instrumental music and have played multiple instruments: flute, piccolo, clarinet, tenor saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, drum kit and orchestra bells
I'd like to see a #2 of this quiz! As sequels typically do, it could include some slightly more difficult instruments (euphonium, oboe, bassoon, marimba, snare drum, cello, etc.) while also including some simpler ones that would normally go on #1 (flute, triangle, xylophone, trumpet, recorder, etc.). There could even be a Musical Instruments #3 with some even harder instruments (vibraphone, melodica, English horn, contrabassoon, celeste, flugel horn, cornet, etc.). It'd be cool! :D (and there's a bunch of ideas to work with right there!)
Only thing I couldn't get was alphorn (I always knew them as "Swiss horns"). Otherwise, EASY. College music diploma and a lover of classical and world music.:P
Damn it! I typed in French Organ for French Horn *facepalm*. And how I didn't get accordion, I don't know. I did watch The Wiggles when I was a little kid, so I should have gotten that.
Actually the accepted definition of a TAM-TAM is a flat-faced gong of indefinite pitch. In other words, it does not have a boss/dome/nipple/ cupola at it's centre and may or may not have a turned over rim and has not been tuned to a specific pitch. This GONG shown has a cupola at centre:
I know it's not the correct English spelling, but since you tend to be somewhat lenient on spelling mistakes, could you accept “accordeon” for “accordion”? It's spelled with e in lots of languages, and I personally spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I did wrong.
I had the same issue, I really couldnt figure out what the problem was. I ended up looking for the translation, which I usually dont and was surprised to see it written with an i.
why do you not accept rondador for the panflute. yes, it is a panflute but because the lengths go up and down it's specifically a rondador so that's what i wrote first.
I thought it was a midwinterhorn. When it wasnt accepted I was surprised for a few seconds, somehow I managed to manufactur alphorn. (Which i was surprised it took, cause I felt like I was making it up)> I guess the different is in size, alphorns are longer than midwinter horns, that is the only difference.
I wonder what the cut-off length is, when it stops being a midwinter horn and when it starts being an alphorn. Wasnt able to findo info about it ( though I sure it is out there somewhere)
Very enjoyable quiz! Although I'm not sure you should accept "horn" for "French horn". Many kinds of horns exist, some of which are actually on this very quiz.
Actually "horn" is definitely the preferred name by players of the (French) horn -- some get quite irate if you say "French" horn. The term is still in use among e.g. jazz players, who call everything that's blown a "horn" so they need to differentiate.
Whoops - this quiz was featured today for "uncommon instruments awareness day," and since I didn't read the title of the quiz I assumed it was supposed to only include uncommon instruments, so I never even tried "guitar", "violin", or "clarinet." Got lute, sitar, and steelpan though.

take away the sheet music.
How do you make a fiddler quit playing?
put sheet music in front of him.
Also like : The difference is; people clap after a violin song but during a fiddle song.
Alpine Horn
Kettle Drum
Steel Drum
& Pan Pipes all accepted
Well done nscout9 for spotting the valves on the trombone
