Gold was discovered near Sacramento in January 1848. The discovery was virtually unknown in the United States (California was not yet part of the USA) until the New York Herald reported about it in August. Few people were able to pick up stakes and travel across the continent, think foot and horseback (no transcontinental railroad), until 1849 when they began showing up en masse... hence the term 49ers. So many showed up that they petitioned for, and received, statehood in 1850. California was the first state on the West Coast and was almost 500 miles (800 km) from Texas, the next nearest state.

Got all of them with 1:02 left... though Eiffel, Mormons, and Potato Famine were complete guesses.

should have less time, I randomly typed my way through half of the answers.

Yes! Got them all with 0:29 remaining at 7:26:38 PM on February 26, 2019. I knew most of them. The ones that gave me trouble were the start of Queen Victoria's reign, when Mormon pioneers reached the Great Salt Lake, when Darwin published On the Origin of Species, and when the Transcontinental railroad was completed. The rest I either knew the correct year or knew the decade and thus only had a few guesses to make.
