Australia is an island, as well as a continent. Continents have a much more vague definition than islands do. Everything on the map is an island. Eurasia/Africa is an island. The Americas is an island.

By that logic, North America, South America, Africa and Eurasia are all islands too. You have to have a cut off somewhere between continent and island.

Apr 17, 2018
Agreed. The claim - oft repeated in Australia - that it is the only island continent and thus world's largest island has always seemed odd to me. Arguably the Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia are connected to another continent. But - even if you accept that - what about Antarctica? Why is it less islandy than Australia?
+1
level 80
May 3, 2018
First, because Antarctica is left off of more maps than New Zealand, and second, because if you were to remove all the ice, it's likely that Antarctica would be an archipelago, with no land mass larger than Australia. Hard to say for sure, though, since you'd have to measure how high the land would raise if the ice weren't pushing it down.

Australia is a continent!!! "Australia and Oceania" is a region and continent of Australia is a part of that region. Eurasia and Africa are the same land mass (later separated by humans) but divided into 3 continents based on cultural differences. Cyprus is geographically considered to be part of southwest Asia but from cultural pov (Greek culture) it belongs to Europe.
