1 trillion is already difficult to visualise, but 105 trillion!?

Just so you have an idea of how big 1 trillion is, a trillion seconds is about 31,710 years. But 105 times that!? Madness.

It makes me ask: why have they done that? And how do they know they are right? Has anyone checked every digit? There must be better uses of computer time.

Lots of complicated maths is how! And while it may seem like a "waste" of time, it's actually often used as a benchmarking tool to showcase how powerful a computer is, as well as advancing our methodology for computing Pi to ever increasing levels of precision.
