I think a couple of the answers are the wrong way around here - Constantinople was the capital of the Roman Empire from 330-395AD, and Constantine the Great (who renamed the city after himself and made it his capital) certainly resided there for the latter part of his reign - though he was indeed in York in 306AD when he was proclaimed emperor.
