Using data from a National UFO Reporting Center Database, see if you can name the 15 states you are most likely to see a UFO based on number of sightings since 1974.
For the record, Nevada and New Mexico, which have reputations driven by "Area 51" and "Roswell," come in at 27th and 28th with 1,605 and 1,578 sighting respectively.
There is strong correlation between the population of the state (P) and the amount of observations (O). California is first in both lists. Probably more describing number is proportion O/P.
If we take any measurement for example in California and Utah, the absolute number in California will be much bigger, unless there is some outward reason for larger proportion in Utah. With UFO observations it is part of discussion, what could explain (possible) differences between proportions in different states.
Good point... sightings per thousand or something of the like might help smooth that out, but that often weighs the population heavier than the sightings. I guess the question, "Where are you most likely to see a UFO?" still holds true by the pure numbers. I believe Georgia is the only top ten most populous state not to make the list.
