The disc is comprised of flats and pits in rings, called tracks

A laser is passed over the tracks as the disc spins

The pits do not reflect light

The flats reflect light back to an opto-electric sensor

The opto-electric sensor detects the change in light

and transmits a signal back

The process is repeated for each track, until all data has been read
