This French Guyana issue just bothers me. At times quiz makers here take it in consideration(usually in order to be tricky) and at others they don't. There should be a standard.

@RogerSilveira. That's simply not true. We always consider French Guiana to be an integral part of France, just like we consider Hawaii to be part of the United States. We are very consistent on that.

It's a bunch of Malarkey if you ask me. This quiz is about neighbors and bordering. When a part of a country doesn't even border its own country is shouldn't be part of a quiz like this one. I'm not arguing the political definition of the area, but French Guiana should be excluded on this quiz. When you look on a map of South America, it does not say "France" next to Suriname. Compare and contrast to Kaliningrad where the border does say Poland/Russia.

It's not a bunch of malarkey. We consider Hawaii to be just as much of as US state as France considers French Guiana to be a region of their country. Most maps show French Guiana (FR), just as they show Hawaii (U.S.) It's a legally and well-known territory of France. Just because non-French people don't often remember this doesn't mean we should change the facts to suit their needs on this quiz.

Consider the scope of the quiz. As I said, I'm not arguing the political status. Only the contiguous part of the country should count here. It makes for a better quiz in my opinion, that's all. France is bigger than all of its surrounding neighbors in Europe. I say Malarkey, for this quiz.

French Guiana is as much a part of France as Paris. Just because it's separate from the rest of the country doesn't make it a territory.

So if, say, there were a quiz about border lengths (which I'm sure there is) and we're listing the US/Canada border, we shouldn't include the Alaskan border?

Well spoken ryansem :) plus it is not even an autonomous country (Just like you wouldnt call hawaii a country) it has the same flag as france, it is simply a piece of france. It is not like greenland which IS an autonomous country, though not a sovereign state (but does have home-rule), and does have its own flag. (even though after spending time on jetpunk some people start to think certain countries arent countries, simple because they are not sovereign and therefore usually excluded in quizzes)

I think considering French Guiana to be part of France makes perfect sense. It's an odd fact of geography that is just part of this type of quiz. I myself typed France and was confused, then remembered why it wasn't included on this list. Lots of countries have territory which is separated by ocean and still count. The UK and Indonesia are obvious examples in this quiz. Just because it's further away and so harder to remember doesn't make it unfair.

In that case then why did the UK make the list? Spain shares a border with Gibraltar which is a dependent territory of the UK and Spain is the larger country.
+1
level 62
Nov 11, 2019
Because Gibraltar is a territory, and Guiana is a department (more like a state or province). It's not about whether a country has land overseas, but *how* that land is administrated and represented in government. Guiana is treated like every other department in France, so it is included as part of France. Gibraltar is not treated in the same way as the constituent parts of the UK. For example, it has no representation in British Parliament. Don't focus on the borders. Focus on the functioning of the overseas land in relation to its parent country.

Yeah, in this case if you argue for France to be included then you would need to argue for Ireland to be included as well. Actually, never mind. I can see people arguing for that too.

In that quiz, the UK doesn't count because of the border between Spain and Gibraltar. In this quiz, the UK is included in spite of Gibraltar, but France is excluded because of French Guiana. Of course, French Guiana is considered to be part of France, whereas Gibraltar is an overseas territory. Nevertheless, consistency would be nice.

I believe the UK makes it because of its land border with Ireland, otherwise, it would be considered borderless in this quiz as it concerns Gibraltar.

@sumguy. We are 100% consistent on this. French Guiana is a region of France, similar to how Hawaii is a state. Gibraltar is a territory, similar to how Puerto Rico is a territory.

It's a very common misconception that French Guiana is a territory or even an independent country.

How can you say you (plural since you used we) are consistent on this. It is the exact same quiz, but with a map included, but has different answers...

No matter what the standpoint is, having different answers to the same quiz is the exact opposite of being consistent. So I dont see how you can say this.

In this specific case, and your comment being a direct reply to sumguy. Because I know usually you do stick with the same standpoint.

So you can explain your standpoint, but that doesnt change the fact the other quiz excludes the UK.. so is not consistent with this one

Not saying it's incorrect but Tanzania does not share a land border with the Congo. I guess technically below Lake Tanganyika there is land but at no point can you walk from the Congo to Tanzania which to me denotes a "Land Border" as the instructions read. For most of the length of the border you can't even see the other shore. Should Tanzania be counted? If you say no what would you say if Lake Tanganyika extended south to Lake Malawi and ran 200 miles further south and made a path all the way to the Indian Ocean. Thus making Tanzania a peninsula

That's an interesting point. Let me ask another question--does Iowa border Illinois? I believe they are completely separated by the Mississippi river, and there is no point where you can walk from Iowa to Illinois (without crossing a bridge, and we know those don't count.)
