For me personally it doesnt work like that, when I get em all it means it was easy for me, so doesnt feel like an accomplishment. Acing a "name the days of the week" doesnt nearly give the same satisfaction as knowing some obscure answers on a very difficult test.

same way as in real life for example I dont cheer when managing to open the front door, but if I manage to get out of an Escape Room with a very low succesrate in time, Im pretty happy ;)

On the "name the days of the week" quiz you would feel good if you got the least-guessed answer but didn't get a perfect score?

And if you went through a quiz, like this one, that was not super easy, and it posed a challenge for you and you had to think about the answers, but in the end you managed to get them all maybe with just a few seconds to spare, that's not as good of a feeling for you as when you miss two or three?

How is Coulson or Ultron not on here?
+2
Level 67
May 19, 2018
Coulson hasn't appeared in an MCU film since The Avengers, so there has been a lot of time for characters like Dr. Selvig, Yondu, etc. to surpass him. Ultron is kinda surprising, but there was a lot going on in that film with multiple antagonists (Klaue, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, etc.) I wouldn't be surprised if he just missed the cutoff.
+4
Level 82
May 19, 2018
Coulson's roles in Iron Man and Thor were barely more than cameos. He was charming and became an early fan favorite but then he died in Avengers and hasn't been back since. (Selvig hasn't done much since then, either, but he had a much bigger role in the first Thor movie)

I was also a bit surprised to not see Ultron, but, a lot of villains don't get much screen time and he's only been in one movie. He's also an expensive special effect. Not that surprising upon reflection.

+5
Level 78
May 20, 2018
Coulson just missed the cutoff by a minute and 15 seconds and Ultron by over three minutes. I think Coulson is going to be in next year's Captain Marvel so he should get the time needed to be included then.

Level 78
Jul 3, 2018
I didn't want to include first names only because there's some overlap (Erik Selvig and Erik Killmonger, Peter Quill and Peter Parker, Stephen Strange and Steve Rogers, James Barnes and James Rhodes, maybe more when more movies come out, I guess Marvel really isn't that creative when it comes to the civilian names) and it would make it easier to just randomly guess some of the names since most are fairly common so hopefully it would be alright if I just keep it at full names, last names only, and hero/ villain names.

I tried many spellings of Obadiah, though. I don't remember hearing his last name many times in Iron Man, or his villain name for that matter. I don't think the risk that another character with the same name pops up in the future is very high. Maybe accept the most obvious/unique first names?

This quiz only includes movies in the MCU (the Marvel movies currently being distributed by Disney- essentially all the characters that appeared in Avengers 3 and a couple others) not the FOX movies like X- Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool or the Sony movies which include the iterations of Spider-Man before he was portrayed by Tom Holland.

Damn. Couldn't remember Obadiah's last name. Tried "Strong" and "Stern." So close.

+1

Mar 19, 2019
nah, the one time in the movie they use the term is when Obadiah is talking to Tony inside by the arc reactor prototype, shortly after Tony has announced that Stark Industries isn't going to sell weapons anymore, and Obadiah is trying to talk sense to him and he says "That's what we do. We're iron mongers. We make weapons."

The director of Guardians of the Galaxy has been very clear that baby Groot is NOT the same Groot, but rather the son of, Groot.

So I question his appearance on this list.

+1
Level 78
Jul 3, 2018
I think it would be more confusing to separate the different versions of Groot because I don't think Groot would still be on the quiz if they were though I think most would think he should be. While it may not be the same Groot, both are still Groot. While it isn't an exact comparison, War Machine played by both Don Cheadle and Terrence Howard is included under the same name. JARVIS technically has no screentime in the movies but when I tried to find out how long he spoke for I intended to include it under Vision and give the answer the designation of "Vision/ JARVIS" though they are also technically different characters they are portrayed by the same actor and are certainly closely linked as multiple iterations of the same thing. Unfortunately I couldn't find that information so the quiz ended up just saying Vision.

+1
Level 78
Jul 4, 2018
He's been in four but he was only in each one for a couple minutes and was only on screen for a total of just under 18 minutes. There's a ton of characters that seem important and like they were on screen a lot when I think about the movies but then when I look at the times they really weren't around for that long. Nebula and Ultron are also examples of characters that just missed the cutoff of 20 minutes that I would have definitely expected to be on there before I made the quiz.

Should Talos be added? With his appearance in Captain Marvel plus Far from Home he would be just over 20 minutes. Either way works, but I figured I should at least mention it. :)

but... retroactively it may be? Sony and Disney seem to be getting more and more comfortable working with each other now, after a brief disagreement that almost ended the partnership, but now it appears as though Holland's Spider-Man will be showing up in future Venom movies, and Keaton's Vulture has a role in the upcoming Morbius movie, so the two universes may become increasingly interconnected moving forward.

don't mean to be a pain Modestus, but there is still a lot of inconsistency on this quiz... for example you accept first names for many characters (Ned, MJ, Happy, Bucky) but not for many others (Darcy, Wanda, Agnes - pseudonym I know). You accept last names for most characters, but not for some (Barnes, at least for one). Generous spelling type-ins for some, but not others (I know it's wrong, but Rambo, perhaps? Probably could find others if I tried).

Your quiz and your call, of course, but I know when I was doing my X-Men film characters quiz I tried to be as flexible on this as possible to make it more accessible to casual fans. Like... I know there are probably many people who saw the films, might know that Kitty Pryde's first name is Kitty because she is called that in the films without having any clue what her last name was or that she goes by Shadowcat in the comics (never once referred to by this name in the movies). I can imagine many many fans of the MCU movies...

+2
Level 82
May 18, 2021
... out there (they are the most successful film franchise in the world after all) who have, for example, seen the Scarlet Witch on screen a bunch of times being called Wanda... but who would be hard-pressed to remember that her last name, mentioned much less often, was Maximoff (or how to spell it), and at the same time not realize that the single time in the WandaVision series that Agatha calls her the scarlet witch, that this was a reference to her comic book identity. Die hard fans would know, of course, but I'm sure there are millions of casual fans who would not. (and even diehards might try to type in "Barnes" and then be scratching their head when that doesn't work)
+2
Level 82
May 18, 2021
anyway might want to do a once-over look at the type-ins and make sure for every character you can type in 1) their first name 2) their last name 3) any film or comic book aliases they had... in some cases there are multiple. If you feel like being generous. I think the quiz would remain fairly challenging even with these allowances.

Was Iron Man always the main Marvel character, or does his outsized role in the movies owe mainly to the fact that the first movie was such a hit and Robert Downey, Jr. is so popular playing him? I remember him when I was young, but I don't recall him being the leader or the signature hero. I always thought that was Captain America.
+1
Level 82
May 18, 2021
The latter. The Avengers don't really have a leader. Cap would be the closest thing to fitting that role. But Iron Man was always more of the face of the organization and franchise. This was due undoubtedly to the facts that the character and RDJ's portrayal of him both became extremely popular, that Iron Man was the first film in the MCU (and Iron Man 2 was the 3rd), and that since Tony was the first and most popular Avenger to show up on screen in the MCU he naturally ended up featuring in a bunch of different movies and wound up with the most total screen time.

Though it is surprising to me even considering all of the above just how much more he got than everyone else. A full 112 minutes more than the 1st-runner-up. Even including the 2 multi-part miniseries that several other characters had on Disney +, which didn't feature Tony at all.

Give it another 10 years and maybe Spider-Man or Thor will catch up.
