Last time, the Kasayahan Tribe lost and was put up for elimination. Let's see the votes.


I think it's pretty obvious, so I'll make this quick.

I know that there was some controversy surrounding MKF's elimination. I will try my best to remain consistent in posting these every Saturday/Sunday from now on. MKF will also get to choose the FOURTH contest as consolation for an unfair elimination. Right now, let's work on the third challenge.


Here are the weekly posting times per each time zone:

Western US/British Columbia: Saturday afternoon

Eastern US/Quebec: Saturday evening

Europe: Saturday night, possibly past midnight

Australia/ NZ/ Philippines: Sunday morning

Challenge #3: Math Mania

This challenge will feature various math challenges where your team can earn points! The team with the most points wins! All answers are due by Tuesday, November 14 at 9:00 PST (your comments must say "November 14, 2023" or earlier for it to count)


Challenge #1: Four Nines

Using four 9's, make every number from 1-100. You can use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, factorials, exponents, parentheses, square roots, and even repeating decimals! You cannot use any other digits other than nine.

Example: 9 x 9 / 9 - 9 = 0.

Points: One point per solution, 100 points maximum, one solution from 1-100. The TWIST: no one can submit more than 25 solutions. This is to encourage teamwork. If one or even two of your members are inactive, you can still earn a full 100 points. You cannot submit more than one solution for a number.


Challenge #2: The 89 Challenge

Using the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, make the number 89. Once again, you can use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, factorials, exponents, parentheses, square roots, and even repeating decimals! You do not have to use the digits in order, but if you do, you get more points!

Points:

1 point: Numbers are used out of order

3 points: Numbers are used in order (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7)

5 points: Numbers are used in REVERSE order (7,6,5,4,3,2,1,0)

Twist: No one can submit more than 30 points worth of solutions.

Maximum points possible: 180 points


Challenge #3: Pattern-Finding'

Find the solution or the next number in the pattern for each set below:

A: 1 + 1/4 + 1/16 + 1/64 + 1/256, etc... = ?

B: 11, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, 23, __

C: 1, 2, 5, 14, 41, 122, __

D: 3, 1, 4, 1, 5, 9, 2, __

E: 1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/4 + 1/5 + 1/6, etc... = ?

F: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, __

G: 31, 28, 31, 30, 31, 30, 31, ___

H: 2, 7, 1, 8, 2, 8, 1, 8, 2, 8, ___

I:  3, 4, 6, 10, 18, ___

Points: 10 points per correct answer.

Challenge #4: Decoding Messages

This challenge requires some real collaboration. For each set of letters, figure out what the message is saying. Hint: This is Math Mania, so this involves math.

Challenge #5: Algebra Problems

Solve each equation for x.


a. -8(6x + 3) = 192

b. (3x + 2) (5x - 3) = 208

c. 2(3x - 2) + 9 = -5x

d. 3 + x = 2 (2x - 1)

Points: 10 points per problem

Maximum points: 40 points


Challenge #6: Ten-Digit Number Problem

I am thinking of a ten-digit number. This number contains the digits 0-9 exactly once. The first n digits of the number are divisible by n. (For instance, the first four digits  in the number are divisible by four)

What is my number?

Points: 6 points for each digit placed in the correct spot.

Maximum points: 60 points

For challenges 1 and 2, if you were to use a number as an exponent, would that count as the number? When I’ve done previous stuff like this it hasn’t, so I’m curious.

I don’t think you can. Because if you use 9^2 you’re using the digit 2 and can only use four nines.

It does say exponents though, and you’re not gonna go using 9 to the 9th or even 3 to the 9th. 3 to the 3rd would be useless as well, and 9 to the 3rd can’t get you very much numbers, even with dividing.

Shouldn’t eliminated players be removed from the tribe group so they can’t contribute to future challenges (since that’s how Survivor works and they’ve been voted out).

Gekko: Thank you so much for all the effort that went (and is going) into this game. Thanks also for adapting to which things are working and which aren't, like being more clear about when challenges will be posted.

This third challenge is by far the best of the 3, because of the asynchronicity. In a direct race between tribes, there will always be unfairness and people who feel like they've been left out due to schedule, as nobody can be available all the time to respond immediately to whatever challenge is posted. I'd strongly recommend trying to make the future challenges a lot like this one: with a few days for people to respond when they can. If not, I imagine participants will need a LOT of heads-up to set aside the exact time they need to be free (very difficult, for Jetpunkers are both busy people and scattered across all the time zones of the world).

Thanks again, man. This rules, even if there are a lot of hitches logistically.

For challenge 2, let’s just say we were making 3. 2+1 would count, but would 1+2 count as a separate answer?

What I’m saying is is it allowed to rearrange the orders of stuff like addition, subtraction, and multiplication within a problem even if it’s essential the same equation?

For challenge six, I'm a bit confused as to what you mean. For the number 1234, would the numbers 1, 2, 3 & 4 all need to be divisible by four, or just 1234 as a whole?

1 has to be divisible by 1

12 has to be divisible by 2

123 being divisible by 3

1234 being divisible by 4

But you're doing this with a ten-digit number.
