Himalaya means "Abode of the Snow". The Sanskrit word for snow is himá (हिम). There are similar words with the same Indo-European root. In Greek the word for winter is cheima (χειμα). In Polish, winter is zima. In French it is hiver. In Latin it is hiems and the verb hiberno means "to spend the winter". This gives us the English word hibernate. This concludes the linguistic connection. As for the question, is there hibernation in the Himalayas, the answer is yes. The Himalayan marmot and Himalayan brown bear do hibernate there.
