A massive explosion has rocked the port area of Beirut, Lebanon. The explosion occurred at around 6:00 PM local time. Residents described the explosion as having a mushroom cloud, followed by a sonic boom that destroyed many windows in close proximity. The shock could be felt as far away as Cyprus, and was the equivalent of a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. Local officials found traces of ammonium nitrate in the explosion site, which is a flammable compound. The cause may have been due to negligence and investigations have started. The death toll is at 78 and is subject to rise, and more than 4,000 have been injured.
