Although the core of a wooden pencil is commonly referred to as "lead", wooden pencils do not contain the chemical element lead, nor have they ever contained it; "black lead" was formerly a name of graphite, which is commonly used for pencil leads.

Adding onto this:

If you think about it, every part of a wooden pencil except for the paint and the little aluminum guard at the end comes from a tree. The wood comes from a tree, the rubber eraser is made of latex secreted by trees, and the graphite–which is actually just a stage in the formation of coal–comes from trees.

During mass urbanization in early 19th-century America, hundreds of thousands of new city-dwellers found themselves lacking entertainment. Out of this boredom arose the sport of "pedestrianism", wherein people would literally just watch other people walk. The phenomenon became very popular in the US, eventually spreading to Canada and Australia. The sports betting industry began to fund pedestrianism, and large tournaments and competitions were even held. Thousands would flock to arenas to watch some of the best pedestrians from around the world walk around a track. It was huge! Eventually, the rise of cycling would cause pedestrianism to fade as a national interest, but it still remains an interesting period in sports history.

They sat up, sprinted to their computer, hastily opened www.jetpunk.com, but then a monster came from the deep. It was Antijeppy! He chased after them, maneuvering around furniture and obstacles. They raced into the garage, and found their shiny new 2020 BMW X5 parked there. They fumbled for the keys as Antijeppy closes in. Closer. Closer. Closer. Then, they found the right key, and WHOOSH! Jeppy comes in from around the corner! The battle rages on for ages as Dollyfroggy goes out. They get on the freeway and think they're safe. A few hours go by, and all seems well. But then from around the corner, comes a mysterious shadowy figure. Bullet holes smash the windows and damage the doors, but Dolly manages to crash into a building with a computer, thus posting their fact. But unfortunately, he returned.

Finally, by 5:00 AM, in the depths of despair, Dollyfroggy sadly writes the word 'Tonga' on their paper pad and depressedly counts the letters. Oh joy! Reverse alphabetical order! +5
Level 50
Apr 18, 2024
10000-25000 blue whales \ 700 trn krill \ 1m krill per day

700 trn / 1 mil = 1 in 700 mil chance of being eaten by specific blue whale every day

700 mil / 10000 or 25000 = 1 in 70000 chance of being eaten by any blue whale every day for [10000 blue whales] or 1 in 28000 chance for [25000 blue whales]

the average lifespan of krill is 10 years

(69999/70000)^3652 = 94.92% chance of never being eaten by blue whale (entire life) so 1 in 18,67 chance of being eaten by blue whale (entire life), 5,08% of krill die by blue whale for [10000 blue whales]

(27999/28000)^3652 = 87.77% chance of never being eaten by blue whale (entire life) so 1 in 7,18 chance of being eaten by blue whale (entire life), 12,23% of krill die by blue whale for [25000 blue whales]

the chance as a krill of being eaten by a blue whale (somewhere between 5,08 and 12,23%) is about as high as being killed by another human (intentional or not), as a human (about 7,7%)

A new urban problem: dense areas and cities around the world are facing the issue of severe subsidence. Translation: they're sinking. Mexico City, New Delhi, Jakarta, most of the US East Coast, Tokyo, Cairo, nearly half of China's cities, the Netherlands, significant areas of California, and many more areas are all slowly sinking below sea level. This is due to a number of factors. In coastal areas like Jakarta, it's mostly due to sea level rise. In areas like California, it's more of a tectonic problem. In China, the main causes are groundwater over-extraction and rapid urban development. Mexico City is in a similar situation. In New York City: parts of Manhattan were built on a landfill, the sea is rising, and the massive buildings atop the ground are simply too heavy for the ground to hold them. The East Coast is eroding and also sinking due to urban overdevelopment.

It's insane.
