Actually, I've never understood putting "Federated states of" in front of Micronesia, but not putting, e.g. "Republic of the" in front of Sudan. Both Sudan and Micronesia were originally names of regions and later became names of independent countries. In general, Jetpunk seems to accept names of countries in every-day usage. That's why I don't understand the Micronesia thing.

How was New Guinea occupied by the axis? The Japanese invasion force that was supposed to attack Port Moresby (in New Guinea) was turned back at the Battle of the Coral Sea, when the light carrier Shoho was sunk, the carrier Shokaku damaged, and the Zuikaku's air crew killed in battle. The invasion was subsequently called off.

I agree that New Guinea was occupied. The area around the Huon Gulf and Peninsula were occupied by the Japanese in 1942. One of the places that the Australian Diggers played an important role by crossing the Owen Stanley Mountains on foot to help in the recapture of Lae and Buna. The Coral Sea Battle did turn back the Japanese invasion force planned for Port Moresby, but it was just one prong of their "Operation MO". The other phases had been successful. Also not mentioned was that we lost the aircraft carrier, Lexington and that the Yorktown was severely damaged and was forced to return to Pearl for repairs.

Controlled by Vichy France, which QM has excluded in the caveats. But another point - as much as I love the film Casablanca, it is not the best place to study WWII history. There are glaring historical errors in the plot - DeGaulle was in exile and couldn't have signed the letters of transit, and if Victor Lazlo was such a well-known warrior for the resistance, the Nazis would likely have found a reason to shoot him on sight and Captain Renault wouldn't have made a whimper about it.

Austria is not listed as an Axis member primarily because, I suppose, it was annexed by Germany in the Anschluss, and thus did not join the Axis cause entirely of its own will, unlike other countries which installed their own separate pro-fascist governments. Keep in mind that Austria was considered to be a part of Germany's sovereign territory, and not a separate sovereign nation, after the Anschluss occurred.

This is one of the crudest misconceptions I have ever seen on this site. Finland was never occupied by the Axis and that 100% makes this quiz utterly ridiculous. Finland was unfortunately a co-belligerent by its own terms, teaming with Germany against the Soviet threat just for survival and payback. Finland only gave the Germans the right to advance through Finnish Lapland which certainly doesn't count as "occupation". When Finland was eventually forced to make a separate peace agreement with the Soviet Union, it was also forced to start the Lapland War. So there was a small sorry group of Germans suddenly having to scramble away hastily from Lapland, but that doesn't even count for 1%. From an ally to an enemy but never occupied!

You should've included Algeria, Morocco and Egypt. I'm pretty sure Algeria and Morocco was occupied by axis powers (US retook by operation torch) and I'm also sure there was a time when Italy marched into Egypt (battle of El Alamein). Also, I think some more French African colonies in Sub-saharan Africa submitted to Vichy French forces and I think that should be counted as 'occupied by axis'
