I think the characters (for want of a better name) that ask these silly questions, do so to create the arguing that ensues. In future all intelligent Jetpunkers just ignore these half-brains and with luck they may go away.
Both UEFA and FIFA have Scotland Wales England and Northern Ireland as separate countries. They even have Gibraltar and Faroe Islands as ´countries´. So it is not stupid to think it could be an independent nation.
I believe the reason why anyone would ask about Northern Ireland is that the British call it a country even though it's not a sovereign nation. It's just their choice - Just like other countries choose to call their similar areas states.
No need to be so cynical. It's a perfectly reasonable question someone might ask who hasn't wasted hours upon hours of their life here like us veterans.
This is a perfectly reasonable question for people who aren't familiar with country classifications. Anyway, here's my answer:
Northern Ireland is one of the four entities that make up the sovereign nation of the United Kingdom. A common misconception is that it is a country; while England, Scotland and Wales are constituent countries (not sovereign nations) within the UK, Northern Ireland is actually only a province and has never been a country in its own right.
Additionally, JetPunk, the United Nations and pretty much all other international organisations recognise the UK as a country, not England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland individually.
Nauru is 'laughter' in Finnish language so if you ask me, all Finns should be aware of this country. :) Well, I know the name but the location is still "somewherethereinoceania". WIP. ;)
I like it because oceania (australia) is a ''mysterious'' continent, Wdim by ''mysteryous'' is that there is a lot of abandoned and forgotten countries there, like Nauru, Micronesia, Samoa, Marshall islands, Solomon islands, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Tuvalu...
First one of these I got 100% on in a while. I can ace the countries of the world quiz easily but when I have to recall countries that start with a certain letter I usually blank.
nah I don't even look at the map doing the CotW quiz.. I just visualize it in my head. I try to do the same thing when doing these quizzes and quickly run through each country 1 by 1.. but for some reason it works sometimes and other times by brain skips.
I believe it's because a letter may have multiple phonemes, so it makes sense we get a bit lost. when we're visualizing a map, our brain has only one chore to focus on.
I find the same thing, for countries of the world I work my way around and can usually get them all, but for the countries that start with a particular letter I often miss one or two
just to get the discussion going... holland are provences of the country, north and south holland. It has wrongly been used as the name of the country, probably because centuries ago the most influential people came from those two provences ( and perhaps utrecht)
With other first letter country quizzes in which Jetpunk accepts a very common variant, I think the quiz should add a free answer for Papua New Guinea, just to save people typing in the answer. The C first letter quiz does that for both Congos and for Ivory Coast.
The B quiz does so for Myanmar.
The M one does so for Micronesia (although, interestingly, not Myanmar).
See also the P quiz and Palestine.
[Note: I don't think that it's necessary for the Netherlands even though the issue does arise there too.]
proud to have gotten nauru, but missed new zealand.. ugh..northkorea took me a while too, and weirdly the one I got before ( so as one of the lasts) was norway...
Never in my life would I have gotten North Macedonia. Even if I put North in front of a ton of random countries I still wouldn't have typed Macedonia. North South Africa, North East Timor, North North Korea, North Jamaica, North Vatican City...never woulda guessed it.
North Macedonia now. I think Swaziland changed their name recently, also, and Bujumbura is no longer the capital of Burundi. And it's only February. These guys must own stock in school globe companies...
North Macedonia's name was changed 3 days ago from playing this quiz, and I had to google the new name. There was no way I would have known that. Learning something new every day.
There is a city in Greece called Macedonia that Macedonia (the country) wanted to name themselves after. However, Greece wouldn't allow them so they just made their name North Macedonia.
Macedonia is a general area in that region, with lots of history. North Macedonia represents that they are in the north of that area. A bit like South Africa, when there's no country called Africa, but it's in respect to where they are in their region/ continent.

And then I also forgot Nepal lmao
I think it might be because it isnt one word. You dont tend to think about words like new north and south.
*Forgets Norway*
