I wish there was a way to label the answers on the map. Even given the highest peak and name of range in the answers, I still had no idea where many of them were located. I know, I know, that's what Google is for.

They are not synonymous - Australian Alps refers only to a part of the Great Dividing Range from ACT to Victoria

If the mountain range was instead found on New Zealand’s North Island, would they be called the Northern Alps?

No, I think it's because the explorers going to find new land in the *south* (of the earth) thought the mountains looked like the alps and therefore named them the Southern Alps
