I couldn't spell Chamonix to save my life!

Much harder than the Summer Olympics one. Most major cities are not in places that would be suitable for ski jumping.

Damn. After Innsbruck I was thinking Garmisch-Partenkirchen, because of the ski jump competition around New Year's. Then I thought, yeah it was ski jump, not olympics. So didn't enter that. Also spelling "Sochi" is impossible, because here they spell it "Sotsi" and I keep trying to spell it in "English" with a "t".

So you spelled Garmisch-Partenkirchen with no problem, but Sochi was not only difficult, but impossible?!

Yup. There's just no other way to spell Garmisch-Partenkirchen and make it sound the same. Sochi on the other hand.. English has so many alternative spellings for the same sounds!

Unless in your confused memory it's the "m" in Garmisch is an "n". Then there's no helping you. Plus you get an inexplicable hunger for hot dogs.

Kinda sad that Beijing won the bid for 2022...I was totally rooting for Kazakhstan :(

It would be awesome if Kazakhstan got to host the 2022 Winter Olympics

I agree, it would be awesome to see some new places. It costs SO much money to put them on, though.

Bribery to the ICO members is a costly endeavour.

Beijing in 2022? How many cities have hosted both a summer and a winter olympics before? I think that's the only one, right?

They could probably do a winter olympics in Stockholm... there was a summer one held there in 1912.

Munich made a losing bid for the 2018 winter olympics. There are some rumours for a Stockholm bid for 2026, but nothing concrete yet.

But if Munich got a winter bid, I think most of the actual "snow" events would have to be conducted down in the Garmisch area. Somebody can correct me if there are ski slopes, etc. in the local Munich neighborhood.

Yeah but all the indoor stuff could be in the city. Hockey and all kinds of skating

I'm pretty surprised that the IOC went for mountain sports on artificial snow. In 2015, there was no snow at all on the proposed slopes. Unless 2022 experiences freakish snowfall, they are going to truck in or manufacture every flake. Seems insane.

It's because no one else wanted to bid because the IOC's ridiculous demands. Oslo pulled their bid which left Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Exactly, it's insane. Almaty has plenty of snow every winter, I really don't understand why Beijing won.

First you have to have a group of people put in the position to choose a winner. Then you have to look after those people when they arrive to check on your facilities. Then you have to make sure that they will be looked after when they head off back to vote. You then have to make sure you can reward those people after the decision has been made. Lastly you have to keep your mouth shut regarding your dealings and more importantly be trusted by those people to keep your mouth shut.

I think it's quite simply because China is the much larger, powerful country. An Olympics in Kazakhstan isn't going to make as much of a buzz (or as much money) as one in China. Plus, China aggressively campaigns for these sorts of things as a way to project itself as a world power. Personally, I agree with ander and epicdjyoshi above that smaller countries deserve a chance to promote themselves to the world, and I wish Kazakhstan got the bid... but from the get go, I think it was hard for it to outcompete China.

That being said, I do wonder why China thought Beijing would be their optimal host city. A place like Harbin or even somewhere in the Himalayas would have been better.

I had no idea where the 2022 Winter Olympics will be held, so I guessed Qatar, since that makes about as much sense as having the World Cup played there.

Interesting graph. Though the one thing that I'm most curious about is how Malaysians seemingly are so much better at demography than the average person. Every other country surveyed seems wildly off. Swedes more than most. Israelis and Montenegrins maybe 2nd and 3rd best.
