Even in the US, the yellowjacket is a kind of wasp that nests in the ground.

They don't always nest in the ground - they can nest in trees, buildings, even in junk cars.

It's a type of wasp in the US too. We have so many wasps we don't just call them wasps. Mud dauber, cicada killer, yellow jacket, hornet - all wasps.

York? Is that a type of flower? Part of the coat of arms of the municipality? I'm at a loss…

From Wikipedia: The White Rose of York (also called the Rose alba or rose argent), a white heraldic rose, is the symbol of the House of York and has since been adopted as a symbol of Yorkshire as a whole.

You might have heard of the Wars of the Roses. The House of York was the white rose, House of Lancaster was the red rose.

I've heard of the War of the Roses and houses of York and Lancaster - just never saw their symbol before.

It's not just a Wars of the Roses thing, the white rose still appears on all of the Yorkshire flags and also a lot of company logos

I hadn't either but put two and two together. It looked like a heraldic symbol. And I knew war of the roses was UK, so a city starting with Y in the UK

but still, not too many known places starting with y , regardless of the UK connection

1-yen coins are so ridiculous. They're (usually) worth less than a penny, and they feel like they're made out of plastic. Unfortunately there are still a lot of places in Japan where you need to use cash, so you end up acquiring a ton of them :(
