Level 80
May 12, 2013
Pixar makes movies independently. Disney distributes and markets them. That has been their deal since the beginning, when Pixar was a struggling rendering and FX house and Disney was a monster company with a massive distribution apparatus already in place. The terms of the arrangement were up for renegotiation in 2004 and Pixar could have gone to a different distributor at that time, but ultimately in 2006 they were acquired by Disney and are now a Disney subsidiary. However, Pixar still produces its own movies while Disney merely distributes them, even though there is a lot of overlap now in management.

May 12, 2013
it's not necessarily in order of how good the movies were.. if it were then it would go something like Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, Up, The Incredibles, Toy Story, Toy Story 3, Wall-E, Ratatouille, A Bug's Life, Monster's Inc., Brave, Cars, and finally Cars 2.
+2
Level 40

toy story 2 needs to be lower in my opinion, with 3 rising. Finding Nemo should be 1.

My top 5 would be Finding Nemo (no doubt this is the best one), Wall-E, Incredibles, Toy Story and Ratatouille. I agree that Cars 2 should be last. Simply awful and even though I have Scottish descent, I wasn't feeling Brave either

Great shorts, too. Is "Planes" an Pixar deal?
+1
Level 44
Jun 21, 2013
Pretty sure Planes is Disney on its own
+1
Level 80
Mar 2, 2015
Actually it's not even Disney. It's DisneyToon Studios... which usually only does television and direct-to-video stuff. A lot of C-list talent there. Probably why the movies were pretty bad. Planes was supposed to be D2V, but for some reason they decided to release it to theaters instead. Someone decided the damage that releasing such a film to theaters would do to the Pixar/Disney brand was less than the money they would make from parents desperate to get their kids to shut up for 90 minutes.

Unpopular opinion: I personally couldn't stand Finding Nemo. For the simple reason that the kid was a complete brat. His father and Dory were excellent. The various fish and birds they encountered were also great, but Nemo himself... Better than Cars 2 though I suppose.

Level 80
Nov 22, 2017
To answer the question on the front page: Has Pixar lost its touch? hm... answering from Nov 2017, maybe. I never saw Cars 3 but the first two Cars movies were the weakest movies they ever did so I'm not sure why they made a 3rd one, or even a 2nd. Finding Dory was well received but personally I thought it was boring and a big let down compared to Finding Nemo. Also I was disappointed that Finding Dory contains so many gags that are just badly rehashed from the first film... that's something you see in low brow Austin Powers or American Pie movies, not something Pixar usually does. The Good Dinosaur was so-so. Monsters U. was "meh." Brave was good but, back in 2012 when it was released it was probably their 3rd worst. (now it's merely their 7th) Cars 2 was basically a big budget Saturday morning cartoon. The only really bright spot since 2011 was Inside Out.

Haven't seen Coco yet but it's getting good reviews.

Jun 22, 2019
I found Incredibles 2 to be a let down, as well. Coco was pretty good. Haven't seen Toy Story 4 yet but the last thing they made that I really loved was Inside Out. They may have lost their touch after all.

Level 67

Cars have been and still is crazy popular with little kids. They want cars everything, lunchbox payamas and watch the movie everday... similar to what has been happening with frozen. It has been the only two movies that caused such a hype.(here atleast)

That has nothing to do with what adult people think of the movies of course, but if I go by all the kids I know. They cant shut up about those two, and ring the doorbell to show their new cars socks etc. No equivalent. (I guess the subject has a lot to do with it, cars is appealing to boys and princesses to girls. And yes, each gender can like what they want, I never liked anything girly myself, just stating what I see around me)

It might say something about a decline in the effectiveness of Disney's/Pixar's advertising that the film that was just released is the one that is the least guessed on the quiz. Used to be that when a new Pixar movie came out the advertising was omnipresent and unavoidable. Now... it seems commonplace that they are released and nobody knows.

They have to pump out more movies in a shorter time to sustain the growth rate of a Disney Empire, that's agglomerating more and more mass. Sequels are pretty save bets. I don't even want to know, how many great ideas are not getting greenlit due to cowardice of the executives.

I don't think Pixar is declining, although Toy Story and Monsters Inc are probably the best films and those were among the earliest. There are a lot of sequels, too. I think Up and Inside Out are their best, for sure. They're both written and directed by the same guy, Pete Docter, who definitely seems to approach the movies from a more existential and philosophical perspective. He is also the writer and director of the next movie, Soul, which is apparently about a man's soul being separated from his body. Really looking forward to what he does with that.
