When I consider the role that F W de Klerk has played in modern history, it makes me feel so sad that jetpunkers know more about some obscure Colombian singer and an equally obscure Argentinian footballer. Who will be remembered in 100 years' time? Come on jetpunkers - you can do better than that!

You're mad if you think Shakira is obscure.

And you are insane if you think Messi is obscure. Arguably the most famous human in our world today, possibly second to his rival Ronaldo.

Most famous human? nah, might feel like that if you are a fan, like fans of beyonce think she is the most famous person in the world. But if you dont care about them they dont mean that much. But yes both are names there is a good chance you have heard of.

CardinalSin: I totally agree that de Klerk played an important role in the abolition of apartheid, against strong opposition from his previous base. He was not a perfect man (who among us is), but he was brave, is to be commended and will be remembered by most of the civilized world long after the entertainers and athletes are forgotten. I remembered who Messi is, but only because we are inundated with him on Jetpunk quizzes.

"...is common knowledge he is from Switzerland"...he may be very well known but according to today's stats 30% of us don't know who he is and I'm one of those 30%, and if I don't watch tennis on TV how am I supposed to see the country name connected to him on the screen? I'm more surprised that fewer than half knew Imelda Marcos or Haile Selassie, but I guess being older helps there.

@ander knowing who he is and knowing where he is from are two different things. It is kind of hard not to have heard of him. It is like never having heard of george clooney, even if you have never seen a single film of him. I dont watch any sports, but I have heard of him. But to know more than that is another matter... I thought his name sounded english, so guessed uk and usa. Like you said the extra info is hard(er) to know if you dont watch it and only hear the name getting dropped.

She was born in Alexandria. All of Egypt and most of the known world was nominally Greek for a while thanks to Alexander. Cleopatra was Greek in language and arguably ethnicity but that doesn't change the fact that she was from what is today Egypt.

Aristotle was born in Stagira which is in central modern-day Macedonia. It was an ancient Greek city but because the description highlights 'modern-day country' I'd say it's better suited to Macedonia.

But Aristotle is known to have felt like an alien in Athens. The concepts they propagated such as democracy were notably foreign to him. He also left Athens and returned to Macedonia to tutor Alexander the Great who became the King of the Macedons.

What are you talking about? Stagira is in the region of Macedonia of modern-day Greece, just like the entirety of the ancient Macedonian Kingdom until the conquests of Alexander's father, Philip II. Both historically and geographically, the modern-day country of North Macedonia has nothing to do with ancient Macedonia, except as a dependent territory after that time.
