Wasps Fact
Wasps belong to the Hymenopteran order, as do bees and ants. They have hard exoskeletons and their bodies are divided into head, thorax and abdomen. They all have transparent wings and two compound eyes.
Wasps are solitary as well as social insects. Social wasps live in huge colonies while solitary wasps live alone. There are about 17,000 species of wasps, but only about 1500 species are social.
Wasp nests can be simple or complex. Some nests are burrows in the ground while others are built with mud and twigs and can have many cells and tunnels.
Each nest has at least one queen wasp as well as workers and males.
Not all wasps build nests. Some wasps such as cuckoo wasps, lay eggs in the nests of other bees and other wasps.
Other species of wasp lay eggs in stems, leaves, fruits and flowers instead of building nests.
Adult wasps feed on nectar, and fruit and plant sap while the larvae feed on insects.
Many species of wasp are parasitic in nature, which means that they live part of their lives as parasites inside other insects. The larvae of such wasps feed on other insects and sometimes eat plant tissues.
Wasps are helpful for controlling pests, such as caterpillars.
☆ When disturbed, female wasps can sting. ☆
