As opposed to the French spelling? The original suffix in Latin and then English was -er. The -re suffix comes from the love affair snobs in England had with France in the 1800s. They bastardized all Latin -er words by reversing the logical, original ending.

You can still type it as the French spelling. Both versions are accepted.
