No source for the A.P. Hill quote. I was being a little facetious. One two many Kentucky Straights that night. I have done a little research since then. A.P. Hill was killed shortly before the end of the war. A good man according to many and honourable until death. I apologise if I offended you or anyone else. I have changed the question.

Cordelia75^ A source I have relied on was Shelby Foote. The man must live and breathe 'The American Civil War'. He writes books on the subject. His books were made into a documentary series. He was the technical advisor on two mini-series 'Gettysburg' and 'Gods and Generals'. The first was titled after a big battle somewhere in Minnesota. The second was titled after the supreme beings and superior rank West Point graduates. I think the latter reference included a soldier who could not find his way to a university where he had an appointment to meet the chancellor.

The battle of Gettysburg was in Pennsylvania, lasted three days, was the deadliest battle of the war, and set other terrific records. Foote became well known after he appeared several times in the Ken Burns's PBS series The Civil War.

You know your American Civil War, Cordelia75. Minnesota was to see if you (or anyone else) would pick up on it. You did. Bravo. I thought the series was mainly a Shelby Foote thing. You have enlightened me. I saw it over twenty years ago. The name Ken Burns rang a lot of bells. Nice to meet you. I presume you are a female? Females who are into military history are as rare as rocking horse droppings, I have found. I look forward to further correspondence with you.

I am female and live not too far from Gettysburg. A visit there was the impetus for my interest in the Civil War, and the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Network and C-Span3 often have broadcasts from the Civil War Institute and similar organizations. I don’t follow any other military/war info. I’ve been to Antietam and other sites but Gettysburg is by far the biggest Civil War site. It has been said there is a book or scholarly article on Gettysburg for every day since that war. I am a dilettante, not a scholar.

I am a dilettante AND a scholar. 🤔 My eldest brother was interested in the American Civil War from about eight-years-old and it sort of rubbed off on me. He soon moved on to other things i.e. cars and those annoying things in pigtails. I kept up with it but I am all over the place. One year it was the Pelopponesian War, the next year it was The Thirty Years War... Spanish Civil War... The Tan War... Irish Civil War etc. I think I have come full circle. I get confused now. Tell me, please. Did the Spartans ever fight Napoleon?
